Thank you to the roughly 175 participants at last week’s MEP System Update meeting filled with updates from NIST MEP and center-led best practice exchanges. We enjoyed the discussions and will look forward to receiving feedback from attendees. We also heard from General Nick Justice (Executive Director of PowerAmerica) and Dr. Craig Blue (Institute for Advanced Composites Manufacturing Innovation). Final slides will be available on MEP Connect (use your MEIS username and password) as will notes from the National Summit and MFG Day breakouts. The Advisory Board presentations are currently available on the Connect site. Save the date for the next Update meeting in Detroit, Michigan on September 14 followed by the Advisory Board meeting on September 15.

MAGNET, the Northeast Ohio MEP Center, recently created a whitepaper for the system on how to better market your MEP through LinkedIn. MAGNET has been implementing innovative strategies to reach and engage local manufacturers, and documented them in this whitepaper. Check it out and let us know what you think. We hope you find it helpful. For questions contact Matthew Fieldman or Stephen Herron.
Meet Martin Pleye, he led the team in Coweta County to get the first German Apprenticeship Model approved in both Georgia and the United States Martin Pleyer got his first taste of manufacturing as a teenager, when he chose to work in the industry as part of his apprenticeship program, in which every teen in Germany required to choose a path, and has continued to work in the industry since. Five years ago Martin and his family moved to the United States for an opportunity to work at Grenzebach Corp in Newnan. He quickly noticed that a quarter of the plant floor workforce would be retiring in the next five years.
Martin influenced the community to garner interest from partners and other manufacturers to help develop a similar apprenticeship program. Just last week, the Lt. Governor, officially launched the first apprenticeship model "Georgia Consortium of Advanced Technical Training (GA CATT) Program", allowing high school students to work in manufacturing 80% of the time, while attending school 20% of the time, but still graduating on time, while earning technical college credit, and gaining hands-on experience working in industry. Read Martin's story and view his video as he takes you through his journey to launch the first German apprenticeship model program in the country and discusses how it can be replicated across the state of Georgia.
The Subcommittee for the Advanced Manufacturing of the Executive office of the President National Science and Technology Council released a report "Advanced Manufacturing: A Snapshot of Priority Technology Areas Across the Federal Government." This report captures technology areas in advanced manufacturing that are current priorities for the Federal Government and are strong candidates for focused Federal investment and public-private collaboration. Each technology area is defined, including its industry pull, cross-cutting impact, importance to national security and competitiveness, and utilization of current U.S. strengths and competencies. Major technical challenges and opportunities are outlined, and a sampling of current and planned Federal programs and initiatives is highlighted. View Report
