Meditation is a mind and body practice that has a long history of use for increasing calmness and physical relaxation, improving psychological balance, coping with illness, and enhancing overall health and well-being. Some research suggests meditation may physically change the brain and the body.

There are many types of meditation, including mindfulness meditation. They generally involve

  • Being in a quiet location with as few distractions as possible.
  • Being in a specific, comfortable position (sitting, lying down, walking, or in other positions).
  • Focusing your attention on a specially chosen word or set of words, an object, or the sensations of the breath.
  • Keeping an open attitude (letting distractions come and go naturally without judging them).

Although meditation is generally considered to be safe for healthy people, if you have a mental or physical health condition speak with your health care providers before starting a meditative practice and tell your meditation instructor about your condition.
