Former ambassador Ted Osius is President & CEO of the US-ASEAN Business Council.  Founded in 1984, the Council represents 170 of the largest American businesses in Southeast Asia through its headquarters in Washington, DC, and its seven regional offices.

A diplomat for thirty years, Ambassador Osius served from 2014 to 2017 as U.S. ambassador to Vietnam.  Leading a team of 900, Ambassador Osius devised and implemented strategies to deepen economic, security and cultural ties between the two countries. In October 2021, Osius published his most recent book, Nothing Is Impossible: America’s Reconciliation with Vietnam, covering the two countries’ 25-year journey from adversaries to friends and partners.

Anna (A.) Cathleen Greiner, PhD, Business and Entrepreneurship, Orange County and Member of the District Export Council of Southern California

District Export Councils are organizations of business leaders from local communities, appointed by the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, whose knowledge of international business provides a source of professional advice for their region’s exporters. The SoCal DEC serves the Central Coast, LA and Orange County and has 35 members, 10 of whom are based in Orange County

Dr. Greiner is passionately engaged in higher education, having served as a teacher, dean, and vice president, with deep expertise and responsibility in leadership, work-based learning, college and workforce development, and employer engagement. Her focus is on strengthening collaboration between employers and education, especially in the community college and K12 systems. She is also active on several boards focusing on the transitioning economy, career education, venture capital and entrepreneurship, and emerging learning trends. These include the WFH movement for student and employees and focus on metaverse skills and workforce responsiveness (AI, Blockchain, Digital Media). As a small business owner, she also brings real world application and understanding the global economy to the table.

Announcement of Funding Opportunity 

 

Funding Opportunity Description:

The Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA), a bureau of the U.S. Department of Commerce, has developed a program to support entrepreneurship for undergraduate students at eligible institutions of higher education: Through this BAA, MBDA will provide funding for entrepreneurship programs, including curricula, courses, seminars, and replicable products and tools, that teach students how to develop businesses and commercialize products and services in the domestic and global marketplace. The curricula should be designed to stimulate and accelerate entrepreneurial skill sets in support of the development of minority business enterprises. Through this BAA, MBDA envisions supporting entrepreneurship education and development.

An estimated total of $1.8 million will fund the financial assistance awards under this announcement.

MBDA expects to issue up to six (6) awards for a total term of two years from October 1, 2022 – September 30, 2024 – funded one year at a time. The funding amount for each award in FY 2022 will be approximately $300,711, and MBDA expects to make at least one award for each of the following types of institutions:

  • Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) • Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) • Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs) • Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions (NHSIs) • Alaska Native Serving Institutions (ANSIs)

Eligibility Information:

Eligible applicants include the following institutions of higher education:

  • Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) (otherwise known as Part B Institutions as defined in 20 USC § 1061)
  • Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) (as defined in 20 U.S.C. § 1101a)
  • Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs) (as defined in 20 U.S.C. § 1059c)
  • Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions (NHSIs) (as defined in 20 U.S.C. § 1059d(b))
