Indonesia will once again be recognized as the Partner Country for Hannover Messe, a fitting tribute for one of the world’s most important emerging economies.
Asked to find Indonesia on a world map, most people outside Asia will struggle. While the country is the fourth most populous (just behind the United States), is the largest economy in Southeast Asia (by far), and is made up of a stunning 17,000 islands, the country regularly punches below its weight.
Indonesia is resource-rich and has relied on its petroleum, agricultural and mineral wealth to drive its economy since gaining independence in 1945. As the world’s largest producer of palm oil, source of some of the world’s best coffee and with extensive gold, copper and oil reserves, Indonesia has a lot offer.
As many of its ASEAN neighbors have evolved to become manufacturing powerhouses, Indonesia has lagged behind. With an inward-looking and protectionist regulatory environment, Indonesia has also struggled to attract foreign direct investment that could accelerate a shift to manufacturing.
The tide is changing however as Indonesia strives to create quality skilled jobs for its 290 million citizens. Under the leadership of President Jokowi, Indonesia has begun major reforms that have the potential to dramatically change the economic landscape in this archipelago country. Regulatory barriers are falling, labor reforms are improving the business climate and tax policies are becoming more FDI-friendly. See our recently released market intelligence on these ongoing reforms under Indonesia’s Omnibus Bill for Job Creation. The Indonesia Country Commercial Guide also available for more information.
