IRS Direct File is open 24/7 to prepare and file federal tax returns online directly with the IRS in English and Spanish.

2.  Expanded Presidents Day weekend hours for IRS Direct File customer support 

Many people prepare their taxes during the three-day Presidents Day weekend. 

You can live chat with IRS Direct File customer support on Presidents Day weekend on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Presidents Day weekend hours for Feb 15, 16 and 17:

11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. ET.

Weekly hours resume Tuesday, Feb 18 to Friday, Feb 21:

7 a.m. to 10 p.m. ET.

3.  What's new for the 2025 Filing Season 

Direct File is an option if you lived and worked in a participating state for all of 2024.

The 25 participating states are Alaska, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

If you need to file a state return, Direct File connects you with a free state-supported preparation and filing tool after you finish your federal tax return.

Direct File saves taxpayers time by filling in some of their information by giving taxpayers the option to import data from their IRS account, if it's available.
