Geothermal Market Report
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), in partnership with GTO and Geothermal Rising, recently published the 2021 U.S. Geothermal Power Production and District Heating Market Report. This report presents an overview of the current state of U.S. geothermal power generation and commercial district heating systems, as well as market-wide trends in geothermal technologies and policy.
Highlights from the report include:
- From the end of 2015 through the end of 2019, the U.S. brought seven new geothermal power plants online, adding 186 megawatts of nameplate capacity.
- Since late 2019, nine new geothermal power purchase agreements have been signed in four states, including plans for the first two geothermal power plants to be built in California in a decade.
Three Things I Wish I Knew Transitioning From O&G to Geothermal
Are you looking to transition from the oil and gas sector to geothermal? Check out a presentation from GTO project engineer George Stutz at IADC Drilling Engineers Committee’s Q2 Technology Forum about geothermal drilling challenges. This presentation covers the differences between geothermal and oil and gas drilling and how best to share and adapt oilfield technologies to challenges unique to geothermal drilling.
