Drill Down 6.28

Happy International Rock Day!

Did you know July 13 was International Rock Day? The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Geothermal Technologies Office (GTO) would like to take this opportunity to recognize that rocks rock, but hot rocks rock more. Here at GTO, every day is rock day, and we invite you to celebrate the power and potential of hot rocks, geothermal energy, and all the hard work we all do every day to bring that energy onto the grid and into our homes and communities.

Request for Information: DOE Seeks Public Feedback on Removing Barriers to Participation in Funding Programs

DOE has issued a request for information (RFI) to better understand the current barriers and actions needed to make its funding opportunities, innovation initiatives, and entrepreneurship activities more inclusive, just, and equitable, in line with the Administration’s climate goals.

Request for Information: Energysheds

DOE recently announced an RFI seeking feedback on the concept and definition of the term “energyshed,” and its application to the electric grid. Responses are due at 5 p.m. ET on Aug. 10. For more information, visit EERE Exchange webpage.

GTO Seeking Merit Reviewers for RD&D Projects

Are you are interested in serving as a merit reviewer for GTO research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) proposals? This is a great way to get directly involved in geothermal research, and to learn more about specific initiatives and how the federal review process works. There are several opportunities to participate in 2021 and 2022. Submit your resume or CV to doe.geothermal@ee.doe.gov.

Geothermal Market Report

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), in partnership with GTO and Geothermal Rising, recently published the 2021 U.S. Geothermal Power Production and District Heating Market Report. This report presents an overview of the current state of U.S. geothermal power generation and commercial district heating systems, as well as market-wide trends in geothermal technologies and policy.

Highlights from the report include:

  • From the end of 2015 through the end of 2019, the U.S. brought seven new geothermal power plants online, adding 186 megawatts of nameplate capacity.
  • Since late 2019, nine new geothermal power purchase agreements have been signed in four states, including plans for the first two geothermal power plants to be built in California in a decade.

Three Things I Wish I Knew Transitioning From O&G to Geothermal

Are you looking to transition from the oil and gas sector to geothermal? Check out a presentation from GTO project engineer George Stutz at IADC Drilling Engineers Committee’s Q2 Technology Forum about geothermal drilling challenges. This presentation covers the differences between geothermal and oil and gas drilling and how best to share and adapt oilfield technologies to challenges unique to geothermal drilling. Visit GTO’s presentations webpage to view a recording and presentation slides.
