Modernized Access to Samples Data
In conjunction with the modernization of USGS’s storage and management system for discrete data, the public delivery of USGS samples and water quality data has been modernized. Changes are live as of April 2, 2024.
On April 2, the transition from legacy to modernized systems was successfully completed. All USGS samples and discrete water quality (WQ) data (data collected in separate and distinct events through trips to water quality field locations) is now available through new Water Data For the Nation (WDFN) endpoints.New WDFN pages and features provide access to all discrete water-quality and samples data and information. These pages allow users to find, filter, and download samples data. Read an overview of the new features, including images and links to new pages.
On March 11, 2024, updates to samples data available through the legacy NWISWeb QW system were paused. Going forward, no new data will be available through the legacy system and legacy QW data will be decommissioned later this calendar year.

How can USGS cooperators and public users of USGS data learn about these changes?
Please spread the word that legacy access to water-quality and samples data is changing, and that new WDFN pages and features provide access to discrete water quality and sample data and information. Users can read an overview of the new pages and features and they can attend the webinar on April 11.
I’m a user of the Water Quality Portal (WQP) – what can I expect?
Coming soon, the WQP will begin delivering data in the WQX 3.0 standard. While the USGS transitions to modernized samples data management and storage access to USGS discrete water-quality and samples data is limited to only data published prior to March 11, 2024, in the WQP. Full access of USGS data via the WQP will be restored in the coming weeks. To stay updated on availability on the WQP, check the banner at the top of the landing page.
I am a dataRetrieval user – how will my workflows be affected?
The suite of USGS-maintained data retrieval packages, including R dataRetrieval and Python dataretrieval, will be updated to provide restored access to USGS water-quality and samples data in the weeks following the release of new service endpoints. Users can track progress and learn about new resources that will be available to help transition workflows.
