COAST GUARD ACHIEVES MILESTONE IN BARRIER ANALYSIS
The Coast Guard recently completed the next phase of its barrier analysis process by conducting over 60 focus groups between May and June 2024. The Civil Rights Directorate invited 592 Coast Guard members to participate, and around 300 members actively contributed by providing their insights and experiences about various obstacles or challenges they might face as members of the Coast Guard workforce. The 50% participation rate represents a high level of involvement from the workforce, and we would like to thank all participants who shared their perspectives. Their contributions are crucial in identifying barriers to equality and developing practical solutions to address them. This effort marks a pivotal step towards fostering a more inclusive and equitable Coast Guard.
As we move forward, our contracting partners who conducted the focus groups will use the information gathered from the participants to identify themes that can help inform future policies, procedures, and practices. After analyzing the research materials and clues that could find potential barrier(s), the Coast Guard will then develop and implement a plan of effective activities to eliminate any identified barrier(s).

Lt. Justin Townsend Receives 2024 Society of American Indian Government Employees Award
It’s seldom you meet a person who practices what they preach. Lt. Justin Townsend is such a person — committed to sharing and educating others about his American Indian culture while “walking the walk” as an active role model for our youth. That’s why Townsend has been awarded the 2024 Society of American Indian Government Employees (SAIGE) award at a ceremony in Spokane, Wash. The SAIGE Military Meritorious Award recognizes those who serve in uniform (or have previously served) who have contributed beyond the mission while promoting American Indian and/or Alaskan Native culture.
