Coast Guard Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month Celebrations
The Coast Guard celebrated Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month in May, honoring the diverse cultures and contributions of the AANHPI community. Various activities took place throughout the Service. From Vice Adm. Andrew Tiongson reflecting on unity at the Pentagon, to a Lei Day workshop at Base Honolulu, the month showcased the richness and importance of AANHPI heritage and community spirit.

THE COAST GUARD'S PROGRESS IN PROMOTING EQUAL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY IN FY23
In Fiscal Year 23, the Coast Guard earned a 96.79% compliance rate on the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission's (EEOC) Management Directive 715, a self-assessment tool used by federal agencies to track their civil rights progress. STAY INFORMED: EEOC UPDATES HARASSMENT GUIDELINES
The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has revised its workplace harassment guidelines for the first time in 25 years. These new instructions now safeguard LGBTQ+ workers and extend protections to remote work settings to reflect the modern work environment. All Coast Guard workforce members can ensure compliance and foster a safe, equitable workplace by understanding and implementing these important updates.

SPECIAL OBSERVANCES: JUNETEENTH AND LGBTQ+ PRIDE MONTH
Dr. Opal Lee, the "Grandmother of Juneteenth," virtually joined the Coast Guard on Monday, June 17th for an unforgettable Juneteenth celebration. Dr. Lee is an esteemed activist who played a pivotal role in making Juneteenth a federally recognized holiday. In May 2024, President Biden awarded Dr. Lee with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Nation's top civilian honor. You can watch a recording of the event on Coast Guard SharePoint. Raffi Freedman-Gurspan, Principal Deputy Director of Public Engagement at the Department of Transportation, will join the Coast Guard to help celebrate LGBTQ+ Pride Month. Freedman-Gurspan has an abundance of LGBTQ+ community advocacy and was the first openly transgender White House staffer when she worked during the Obama Administration.
