LAUNCHED: Our New Learning Pathway

Partnership News

Learning Pathway

We have launched our new learning pathway; a self-directed study pathway for staff across the partnership, which brings together key learning resources produced by the Board.

Split into three parts, the pathway presents online learning resources according to essential adult safeguarding information, resources to develop skills, and guidance to enhance practice. The pathway is intended to be a useful resource for staff at all levels, either as an introduction to adult safeguarding, or as a comprehensive refresher.

Annie Callanan, Independent Chair, has said of the new initiative:

“I am excited to endorse the launch of our new learning pathway. It has been developed from bringing together what we know our valued partnership staff need to be aware of and understand to improve safeguarding practice and achieve the best possible outcomes. The pathway is based on learning from our Safeguarding Adults Reviews, audits, and surveys which have told us of where improvements are needed. The pathway draws on our existing and new learning resources and more easily helps to guide you through safeguarding learning and practice. We hope you find the pathway helpful and very much welcome your feedback on it, so please do get in touch to let us know what you think.”

Tom Weedon, Community Operations Manager, West Sussex County Council, said:

I’m delighted to see the launch of this new learning pathway. This is a significant and comprehensive resource to help people explore, develop, refresh and reflect on their safeguarding knowledge and skills. Making Safeguarding Personal is everyone’s responsibility and the learning pathway is an invaluable tool to reinforce and expand our understanding of adult safeguarding practice with a pathway through the vast range of resources and learning available to us all.”

Learning Pathway Workbook

Alongside the pathway, we've produced a workbook, to support learners through their journey. The workbook guides the learner through each digital resource, providing opportunities for reflection, further reading, and discussion points for agencies.

The new learning pathway features some new styles of learning resources. You can find out about these below.

Introducing our 'summary guidance'

Summary Guidance Documents

We are pleased to share that we have created a new range of resources aimed at frontline staff, called 'Summary guidance'.

These documents are short summaries of more in-depth policies and protocols. They are intended to be quick reference guides for frontline staff and should support discussions with supervisors, managers, or safeguarding leads.*

This series includes:

  • Mental Capacity Act
  • Safeguarding thresholds
  • Regulation 18 Notification of other incidents
  • Escalation and resolution protocol
  • Information sharing
  • Multi-agency working

You can access these documents through the learning pathway, or on our Policy and protocols webpage.

*It is expected that supervisors, managers, and safeguarding leads will continue to refer to the source material when making decisions regarding the reporting of incidents and safeguarding referrals.

Launching our 'Explore' series

Explore Documents

We know that some themes and concepts need a bit more information than we can share in a short learning briefing.

For this reason, we’ve created a new ‘Explore’ series, featuring a more in-depth exploration of key adult safeguarding themes, such as person-centred approaches and disguised compliance.

This series can be used to support focussed discussions in team meetings and continued learning and development, and includes the following topics:

  • Concerned curiosity
  • Understanding disguised compliance
  • Person-centred approaches
  • Risk assessment
  • Trauma-informed approaches

You can access these documents through the learning pathway, or on our Learning and podcasts webpage.

Sharing our 'Quick reference' guides

Quick Reference Guides

Sometimes it's useful to have a quick reminder of the importance and relevance of specific adult safeguarding topics.

To support you with this, we've published some 'Quick reference' guides, including:

  • Making Safeguarding Personal
  • Early warning signs
  • Organisational abuse

These will never be more than two pages. You can access these documents through the learning pathway, or on our Learning and podcasts webpage.
