How time flies! The Summer Reading Challenge is over for another year. Thank you to all of you who helped support us with Gadgeteers during this summer, particularly in those really hot weeks.
The Summer Reading Challenge is such an important part of our library offer, and as such we simply couldn’t manage it without the support of our wonderful volunteers. Thank you for helping families get started with the challenge, listening to children talk about the books they have been reading and supporting those families who were making their first ever visit to their local library – it has made such a difference!
Almost 10,500 children registered to take part in Gadgeteers in West Sussex, which is fantastic!
Every year we take time after the end of the summer holidays to reflect on how the challenge went and we would love to know what you think.
What worked well in your library? Would you like to see changes made to how the challenge is run? Do you have a success story that you would like to share with the team? Whatever your thoughts or ideas, we want to hear them – please email us your comments and help shape the Summer Reading Challenge for 2023.
Earlier this year we asked all volunteers with West Sussex County Council to complete an online Volunteer Survey. Thank you to all of you who took the time to complete this.
- 43 library volunteers completed the survey, most responses coming from Community Library Support and Home Library Direct volunteers.
- Horsham and Mid Sussex areas saw the highest number of responses.
- Most of you told us that you volunteer to make a difference, that the Service is important to you and to meet people, make friends and have fun.
- Nearly all of you said that you felt either very or extremely valued.
If you were unable to complete the Survey or have any additional comments do email any feedback to Jo Moeller - Principal Librarian Volunteering.

Library members may use the library computers for free, for a maximum of two hours per day. Visitors will be charged £2.00 per hour. If residents are not library members they can join for free.
Customers can use the computers to access the internet, their email, complete job applications or use Microsoft Office applications. There is also access to eInformation: The Online Reference Library, a collection of high-quality reference and information resources and hundreds of recommended websites.
Customers should contact their local library if they wish to use one of our computers, as some operate a booking system.
Wi-Fi
All our libraries also have free Wi-Fi. To use the Wi-Fi in the library customers need to logon to the WSCC public network and read and accept the terms and conditions. Customers cannot watch live TV via the Wi-Fi as the library service does not have a TV licence. Customers can also use Wi-Fi to log on and use the eInformation service for free.
Useful Information
- The public access computers are known as “PAWS” (Public Access West Sussex) and library staff manage the computers via a system called ICAM.
- Under 16s will need to provide a signed parental consent form, available from all libraries, to use the internet (unless accompanied by an adult).
- Customers can log onto computers with their borrower number (found on their library card) and PIN.
- Customers can use USB memory sticks in all our computers.
- There is a small charge for printing, details of which can be found on our website or posters in the library.
More information about the library computers, internet access and Wi-Fi can be found on our library website.
