Over the last couple of weeks we have welcomed thousands of people to our library Discovery Days.
Free events have been held around the county for people to discover that we have much more than just great books.
Our ‘Love Your Local Library’ campaign aims to show the many activities you can take part in, including family-friendly toddler time, board games clubs, author evenings, free family history webinars and digital subscriptions.
The next event is at Horsham Library on Saturday 3 September from 11.00am to 3.00pm.
For more information check out our Discovery Days web page!
We can’t believe that over 10,000 children across West Sussex have taken part in the Summer Reading Challenge this year! We’ve absolutely loved chatting to all the young Gadgeteers and hearing about the books they’ve enjoyed.
There’s just over a week left for children to collect a certificate and medal, with the challenge finishing on Saturday 10 September. As there was no target for the number of books to read this year, we hope this means lots more children will be able to celebrate their reading achievements.
Visit your local library to pick up the final rewards and let us know what you thought of Gadgeteers by filling in one of our comments forms. Alternatively, you can email us your feedback.
We’re excited to announce our next programme of author events, including:
- Weds 26 Oct at Crawley Library join West Sussex Libraries and Oxygen Arts for a special free screening of Two and a Half Questions, a film exploring the lives and aspirations of the Windrush generation. Followed by a Q&A session.

This is a digital event which you can attend anywhere from your laptop or mobile device.
Isaac and the Egg by Bobby Palmer is a book like no other. It is a story about the overwhelming impact of grief, heartbreak and isolation. It is also a story of hope that comes in the form of … an egg. It is whimsical, imaginative, at times absurd, and beautifully written. We’re looking forward to having Bobby Palmer talk to us about his must-read at Worthing Library on Tuesday 6 September. Call 01903 704809 to book your tickets today.
In Every Mirror She’s Black by Lola Akinmade Åkerström tells a story from the perspective of three black women who end up moving to Stockholm, Sweden. Their stories are all different, but they all share the same harsh reality of being black women in a majority white city. They face racism, micro aggressions and are constantly being let down by the people around them. It is an important and at times heart-breaking story, with captivating characters you feel incredibly invested in.
Why not join military historian Andy Saunders for 'Battle over West Sussex', the story of the Battle of Britain as it was fought in the skies of West Sussex during the Second World War?
The talk will be held at West Sussex Record Office at 7.00pm on Tuesday 25 October. Numbers are limited so booking is essential. Tickets for attendance in person cost £8.00 (£7.00 if you’re a member of the West Sussex Archives Society) and can be ordered by calling 01243 753602. To book for online attendance (£5.00), see below.
