Dear Volunteer,
We hope this newsletter finds you well and that you enjoyed both Volunteers Week and the extended Jubilee weekend.
We also hope that you've had an opportunity to catch up with all our news in the latest Customer Newsletter.
You may have seen that:
- We've been running a survey (now closed) to get customers' opinions of the monthly customer mailout.
- We're looking for help with running Gadgeteers, this year's Summer Reading Challenge.
- And much, much more.
|
We hope that you enjoyed Volunteers Week and were able to attend the events that were running in all parts of the county. It was great to meet some of you as I was out and about.
My colleagues and I very much appreciate the invaluable contribution that you provide and it is great to have an opportunity to celebrate this.

Digital Volunteers are being recruited in libraries to help customers gain confidence and improve their digital skills. Do you know anyone who:
- Has knowledge of digital skills?
- Can spare a regular time slot of 2 - 4 hours per week?
- Can support customers with basic digital enquiries on a 1:1 basis?
For the role profile and/or to apply, please visit the West Sussex County Council website
If you would like further information, or to discuss the role, please contact us by email.
As we look at our long-term strategy for delivering items to customers unable to visit our libraries in person, be it through our Essential Delivery Service or Home Library Direct (HLD) volunteers, we have some areas where we need to recruit significant numbers of new HLD volunteers; Bognor Regis, Burgess Hill, Crawley and Worthing.
If you live or volunteer in these areas please could you help us promote these vacancies, by talking to anyone who you think could be a potential volunteer. If you have any questions please talk to local staff first or get in touch with Jo Moeller, Principal Librarian Volunteering.
Anyone who is interested can be directed to the role profile and application form on the WSCC website or contact us by email for further information. We are also happy to consider existing volunteers doing other roles.
West Sussex Library Service is committed to involving volunteers and provides a diverse range of volunteer roles to help us achieve our goals and reflect the needs of the service, individuals, customers and the local community.
Involving volunteers has a positive impact on our library service, our customers, the local community and on individuals. Volunteers make a difference to West Sussex Library Service because they…
Library Service
- bring a diversity which enriches the library service.
- bring a range of additional qualities, skills and expertise e.g. specialist skills, knowledge and personal experiences.
- help us to expand and extend our services beyond the core service delivery.
- work together with staff and provide support to help us achieve our goals.
- offer a unique perspective on the library service and different ways to engage with customers.
- bring local knowledge, represent local views and help us build relationships with the local community.
Customers and Local Community
- help to promote a cohesive community.
- help more people to access our services and engage with hard to reach customers.
- spend time with our customers in the local community which can help reduce social isolation.
- are passionate about our service and give up their time to help make our values real.
Individuals
- have a more active lifestyle and improved sense of wellbeing.
- develop new skills and retain existing skills.
- meet new people and make friends.
- learn and experience new activities and challenges.
- gain confidence, improved self-esteem and sense of satisfaction.
- enhance skills and gain experience to increase future employment opportunities.
We aim to offer a positive volunteering experience for volunteers and library staff and are therefore committed to allocating appropriate resources to recruit, train, support and recognise our volunteers. Involving volunteers does not replace the specialised roles of library staff who deliver our core services.
Volunteers Make a Difference!
