Donations
Donations from the public are welcome, but only those that meet specific requirements are added to our stock. As a general rule books should be less than four years old and in excellent condition.
When accepting donations we advise the donator of the following information from the Library Service Stock Policy:-
“Donated materials are welcome on the understanding that the gift is without conditions. The Library Service reserves the right to use donated materials to the best advantage of the service as a whole and to dispose of any materials not required, as it sees fit.”
We inform the donator that items are not returnable if they are not added to stock and that we are unable to guarantee addition to a specific branch. We give the donator a ‘Donations Flier’ to remind them of all this information. We thank them for their donation at the point of receipt because the Library Service is unable to respond individually to the many thousands of donations received each year.
The above guidelines also apply to local authors and we will accept one copy of their book.
Suitable items are sent to BSS (Bibliographical Support Services) to be added to stock.
Withdrawn stock
Stock is withdrawn when it no longer fits our Stock Policy. For example, we delete items that are in poor physical condition, when the content is out of date, if there is a later edition available and items which no longer meet the needs of our customers.
Withdrawn items and unsuitable donations may be made available for the public to buy, either through the online booksale on the Library Service website or book sales in branches. If the books are not considered good enough for sale, they are sent to a waste company for recycling.
Once an item has been deleted from the catalogue, the date label is removed and the barcode is obliterated with a marker pen or a ‘withdrawn for sale’ stamp. There is a standard list of prices for the withdrawn stock we sell and the poster with these prices is displayed near the book sale
