Latest Volunteer News

Here is a link to our latest customer eNewsletter, which has lots of news and information from the Library Service across West Sussex.

I would like to say a huge thank you to all our Home Library Direct Volunteers who have contacted me over the past few weeks to discuss the new COVID-19 guidance and risk assessment. We have now welcomed back over 65 Home Library Direct Volunteers who have resumed their volunteer role delivering library items (socially distanced) to customers at home. We really are so pleased to see you all!

We will now start to look at the different ways that we might be able to welcome some of our other volunteer roles safely back into library buildings and I will keep you informed as I know more.

However, we continue to live in a changing environment and guidance continues to evolve at a fast pace, so please don't worry if you are not ready to return to your volunteer role yet. We will continue to keep you up-to-date and, as always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns about your role.

Have you heard about Fun Palaces?

Fun Palaces are about sharing skills and making local connections. Since 2014 there have been 1,789 Fun Palace events - over half of these were in public libraries!

Fun Palaces are looking very different this year. Although events can’t take place in libraries at the moment, the campaign is promoting extra-small, hyper-local Fun Palaces by encouraging people to create their own tiny revolutions of connection.

The next Fun Palace weekend is 3-4 October 2020 and anyone, anywhere, can take part!

Here are some library-themed ideas:

  • Join a community of readers in our Virtual Reading Group on Facebook.
  • Share a story at home. Why not explore our playlist of recorded storytimes which the whole family can enjoy?
  • Singing is known to help the memory and increase wellbeing. Run your own Melody for the Mind session and share a well-known song with someone at home!
  • Help someone connect with their memories. We have some wonderful resources in our Reminiscence Collection which can be reserved and borrowed from your local library. Why not watch our Introduction to the 1960s pack to get an idea of how you can use these resources at home?
  • Teach someone to code or learn the basics yourself. You can reserve and borrow a micro:bit Starter Coding Kit from your local library - it's free!
  • Would you like to feel connected to your community and find out more about where you live? Take a walk around your town, following a free downloadable trail, or explore your local area through historic maps and photos. Visit our website to find out more.
  • Join in with our new online poetry campaign by sharing a poem of hope in the run up to National Poetry Day on Thursday 1 October. Submit your short poems, of no more than four lines, and images (landscape orientation, without identifiable people) that provide messages of healing or hope. You can email a poem and image to us or, if you prefer, share your creations on social media and tag us in. We're using the hashtag #ShareAPoemOfHope
