You're never too old to learn

Checking the Aspire brochure

September is traditionally the month to think about learning. If you're looking for a new direction, why not check out our Learning from home page?

Our education partners, Aspire Sussex, have just launched their Autumn adult education courses and learning programme. You can download the Aspire brochure to explore their range. In it you will find an exciting variety of online and face to face courses, with more to come later in the year.

Aspire offer lots of free courses too. Whether you are looking for distance learning courses, English and maths, yoga, art, languages or family learning, there’s a course for everyone!

Three more weeks of silliness!

Silly Squad laughometer

The return to school usually spells the end of the Summer Reading Challenge but, as you know, this year everything is different.

The Silly Squad Summer Reading Challenge will continue until Wednesday 30 September, which means nearly three more weeks of silliness. That's plenty of time to pick up a medal and certificate from your local library if you’ve been reading over the summer!

This Wednesday we will be posting our last Silly Squad Storytime Special of the summer in our Family Corner Facebook group. You can also find it on our Silly Squad Summer Reading Challenge page where you can go to watch previous specials, and catch up with our latest jokes.

What is the difference between a unicorn and a carrot?

Share a poem of hope

Share a poem of hope

Following on from all the wonderful West Sussex #haiflu that we received over lockdown, we are now launching a new online poetry campaign. From Monday 7 September - Thursday 1 October, to mark National Poetry Day, we’re asking for your poems of hope.

We would like you to submit short poems, of no more than four lines, and images (landscape orientation, without identifiable people) that provide messages of healing or hope. You can email a poem and image to us or, if you prefer, you can share your poems on social media and tag us in. We’ll be using the hashtag #ShareAPoemOfHope.

You can still access Ancestry from home

Ancestry helpsheet

Family researchers only have until the end of September to research their family history at home using Ancestry. After that date, unfortunately, our supplier will no longer be able to offer access from home. We do hope that you have appreciated this facility, even though it was merely temporary!

However you will still be able to use all our other free Family History resources from home. Ancestry will continue to be available free to library members at any of our libraries but you will need to pre-book a computer in advance of your visit. Please see our libraries reopening page to find out more about visiting.

Our enquiries team are also available to help online with quick family history enquiries - just fill in our Ask a Librarian form.

World Alzheimer's Month

Dementia

September is World Alzheimer’s Month, with a special day dedicated to celebrating living well with dementia, on Monday 21 September. We’ll be sharing information throughout the month on our Facebook and Twitter pages, about all the great resources and services we have. They are designed to help people with dementia, their family, friends and carers, to live well and access the library.

Look out for our first online Reminiscence sessions, and some full length Melody for the Mind sessions for you to sing along to at home. We’ll be using the hashtags #WorldAlzMonth and #WorldAlzheimersDay.

You can find out what we have to offer people living with dementia on our Melody For the Mind and Dementia Resources webpage.

New Baby Rhymes

Children's Library

We are not yet able to welcome you all back to our regular Baby Rhyme Time sessions in libraries but we have produced some longer videos so you can join in the singing from home.

The first of the new longer Baby Rhyme Time sessions will go out on Tuesday 15 September. You’ll be able to access it from our Rhyme Time and Storytime page or via the Facebook Family Corner group. You’ll just need your singing voice, your fingers ready to join in the actions, and then we’ll count you in with a one, two, three…..

Lesley Pearse online

Lesley Pearse online

Free tickets to join a special West Sussex ‘Libraries From Home’ live event with Lesley Pearse are now available. This is an exciting opportunity to hear from one of our most popular authors, who has published no less than 28 global bestsellers. Lesley will be discussing her writing career and telling us all about her latest chart-topper, Liar, an enthralling story of murder and deception.

The event takes place on Thursday 17 September at 7.00pm and you will need to register on Zoom in advance. You can also email your questions ahead of the event for us to ask Lesley on your behalf.

If you have never used Zoom, and want some help setting up your device to run it, why not contact our Remote Digital Support helpline? It’s open Monday – Friday 10.00am – 4.00pm on 0330 222 3455 or you can leave a voicemail outside of these times. Alternatively, you can email Remote Digital Support.
