Supported Through Aftermath Of Domestic Abuse

Sam

Samantha Crouch, a West Sussex mum, has thanked Think Family and Early help for the support she was offered through the aftermath of domestic abuse. Her youngest was struggling with confidence, her eldest was starting to skip school and her daughter was taking on too much responsibility as she felt she needed to protect the whole family.

Read Samantha's full story here.

Transformation Reminder

Transformation

WSCC colleagues: Please remember to use the Transformation SharePoint site.

Plans are ongoing to develop a more integrated way of working. We will keep you updated in due course but please continue to work across different teams as much as you can, removing barriers for families and improving the way we work together.

Benefit Cap Thresholds reducing further

The government has announced that from Autumn 2016 (date TBC), benefit cap thresholds will be further reduced. Lone parents and couples with children could currently be eligible for up to £500 per week in welfare benefits; this will reduce to a maximum of £384.62 per week. Further information is available here.

Whilst some families will be exempt, the lower thresholds will significantly reduce the income of many families already struggling with their finances.

Southdown’s Money Management Outreach Team support families struggling with rent arrears and other debts affecting the security of their accommodation; The service offers pro-active, effective interventions which empower families to make positive changes to improve their financial circumstances. Baby Grow with Five to Thrive

Five to Thrive

Your child's body grows better when you give the child good food. Your child's brain grows better when you do five simple things.

Respond * Cuddle * Relax * Play * Talk

Relax: Stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol can injure the human brain. Under the impact of unregulated stress, these excessive hormones change blood supply to key areas of the brain such as those that control language and the self-regulation of mood and impulse. This is the organic explanation for the survival mechanism of fight or flight, in which brain functions that slow down response times (such as thinking) are switched off.

Further details on these developments will be communicated to schools and agencies throughout the term. For further information please contact Susannah Conway FSN Lead for Arun ArunFSN@westsussex.gcsx.gov.uk or Phillip Finlinson FSN Lead for Chichester ChichesterFSN@westsussex.gcsx.gov.uk.

Carers Trust

In February 2016, a Matter community member and student carer started a campaign calling for a tick box on UCAS forms which would prompt young adult carers to identify themselves so that universities could easily find out whether applicants would be studying as well as caring unpaid, for someone with an illness, disability, mental health problem or an addiction. Carers Trust backed the campaign and in just six weeks more than 2,500 signatures poured in to show their support.

UCAS has now confirmed that from 2018 there will be a specific option on its Apply form. Well done to all involved!
