Listening to your feedback on new road scheme
Our major new roads team, and our partners at Balfour Beatty, attended a recent drop-in meeting to talk to you about the South Wokingham Distributor Road.
We heard some suggestions about how we could improve our communications on the project, and we'll be taking these on board for future announcements.
In the meantime, please consider subscribing to our South Wokingham community newsletter for regular, detailed updates on the project.
We know lots of people are affected by the ongoing footpath closures and are looking at all options, but we still aren't sure if we can reopen any safely.
We've also started a comprehensive overhaul of our web pages about the project, and will continue to update them as things move forward.
Finally, we're working to produce a detailed construction timeline which rounds up all the impacts, including road closures, in one place.
Weekend junction closure postponed until further notice
You may have noticed that a planned weekend closure at the junction of Molly Millars Lane and Finchampstead Road, due on 17 and 18 May, was postponed.
This is because we needed further discussions with two utility firms whose cables were due to be rerouted as part of the wider scheme.
We'll let you know when we've got a new date for this, but the main closures are still due to run from late July to March 2026.
Further closures on Easthampstead Road, from north of the level crossing to the Heathlands Road junction, are also expected from winter this year.
We're still working on the exact timeframes for this and will let you know as soon as everything's finalised.
Lorry driver fined for crossing historic bridge
Another heavy goods vehicle (HGV) operator has been fined after they pleaded guilty to breaching road weight restrictions in our borough.
They were ordered to pay £1,112, including prosecution costs and a victim surcharge, following a hearing at Reading Magistrates Court on Monday 19 May.
This followed an incident on 10 October last year, when an 11.5 tonne lorry crossed the Grade II listed Sonning Bridge despite the 7.5 tonne limit.
They were spotted during a routine inspection by the Public Protection Partnership (PPP), our joint venture with West Berkshire and Bracknell Forest councils.
Weight, width and height restrictions prevent roads being inappropriately used by vehicles that are too big or heavy, and PPP officers patrol with Thames Valley Police (TVP) to enforce them.
As we've previously reported, two HGV drivers were recently fined for breaching the weight limit on Rances Lane, Wokingham, following a joint patrol. If you have concerns about limits being breached, you can report this to the PPP.
If you're an older driver, or know someone who is, you can get some advice on staying safe on the roads at two free online talks next month. They're run by West Mercia Police but open to anyone who thinks they could benefit.
Parking concerns: where we can and can't act
Our parking enforcement team work hard to keep our roads clear and safe, but they can't act on every complaint. This includes in areas where there aren't any visible parking restrictions, like yellow lines.
While we've had civil enforcement powers since 2017, Thames Valley Police are still responsible for dangerous parking - for example, parking close to a bend or junction, or on the pavement.
You can report this on the non-emergency number 101, though the police handle each report on its own merits.
They will attend incidents where disabled or vulnerable residents' access is restricted, but are unlikely to attend in cases where parking on a kerb is unavoidable.
You can report breaches where we can act, which includes:
- Parking on double yellow lines
- Double parking or parking across dropeed kerbs
- Parking in a residents' parking space without a permit
- Overstaying in time-limited parking spaces
If you feel a lack of restrictions is causing problems, you can report this to our traffic management team for them to consider.
