Drivers fined for breaching weight limit
Two HGV drivers have been fined for breaching the weight limit on Rances Lane in Wokingham.
The road has a 7.5 tonne weight restriction to stop large goods vehicles using it. One lorry was 26 tonnes and the other 18 tonnes.
They were observed breaking the rules in October last year when Public Protection Partnership officers and Thames Valley Police were on routine inspections.
Both drivers pleaded guilty and were ordered to pay a fine, costs and victim surcharge by magistrates earlier this month.
Environmental restrictions, like weight limits, can be applied to individual routes or a defined area of roads that have been determined as unsuitable for use by vehicles over a certain width or weight.
For example, they are useful in preventing heavy goods vehicles from using minor roads as inappropriate short-cuts between main routes.
 Bikeathon returns to Cantley Park
Wokingham Bikeathon is back at Cantley Park in Wokingham on Sunday 22 June.
There are four routes to enjoy on the day, from 15 to 51 miles, depending on what you’re comfortable with. There will be drink stops and toilets on all the routes.
There’s also refreshments, other activities and attractions on site at Cantley Park for the start/end of each route.
It’s been running for almost 20 years with thousands of riders taking part each time.
It’s now open to register for cyclists of all ages, £20 for adults and £5 for children (with a fee-paying adult). This year it’s raising money for The Cowshed, a local charity which helps people in crisis.
If you feel unable to pay this cost for any reason, email enquiries@wokinghambikeathon.co.uk.
The organisers want to remove barriers to cycling, so while needing to cover costs, they don’t want that to stop anyone taking part.
Our My Journey Wokingham team will be there with their smoothie bike and stand for active travel advice and leaflets.
 Making bus travel more affordable
Since introducing free disabled bus person’s travel in December last year, it’s helped thousands of residents get around the borough more easily.
People with disabled person’s bus pass are able to travel all day, every day, for free when they board in the borough.
You can find out more about the disabled person’s bus pass, including how to apply, on our website, or check out the My Journey Wokingham guide to disabled residents’ travel.
You can check if your stop is in Wokingham Borough by looking at where the borough boundary is on the bus stop map.
If you cannot travel alone, you can also apply for a companion bus pass, check the eligibility for a free disabled person's bus pass. This means that one person can travel with you for free, at any time, if they are supporting you.
Other concessions
My Journey Wokingham also has a guide for all types of concessionary travel, including:
- Senior Residents pass
- Companion bus passes
- Young people concessions

Cycle training during half-term and beyond
We’ve got a host of school holiday cycle training sessions for children in Woodley next week.
Level 1 is done off-road, away from traffic, in an area such as a playground. It provides riders with essential bike handling skills such as starting, stopping and steering.
Level 2 involves riding on roads and providing riders with the skills to navigate through traffic with confidence.
For more advanced riders, there is the Bikeability Level 3 course. This is open to children aged 11 and above who have completed Bikeability Level 2.
Riders will be riding on busier roads in a group of three with one instructor. Riders should be confident and ride regularly.
Sessons run at Woodford Park and must be booked in advance (£10 per place):
Bring your own pedal cycle and cycle helmet, clothing appropriate for the weather, food and water for the day as well as a packed lunch in a small rucksack.
Adult cycle training
There’s also beginner cycle training for adults running at Alder Grove Primary School in Shinfield from 10am to 11am on Saturday (24 May). Cost is £11 per person.
Sessions are aimed at beginners who have never learnt to ride a bike, and those who haven’t been on a bike for a long time. You can borrow a bike, but you need to provide your own helmet.
Cost is £11 per person. If you feel unable to pay this cost for any reason please contact us to discuss options with us.
We wish to remove barriers to cycling, so while we need to cover our costs, we don't want this to prohibit anybody from attending.
