We wrote to you on 24 March 2020 to share the Chief Dental Officer’s red notice with you. Following further discussions with the CDO’s office this email aims to clarify the expectations of private only practices in terms of continued operation:

Firstly, the red notice is issued to protect both staff and patients but also to adhere to the UK and Welsh Government’s clear instruction for people to stay at home unless absolutely necessary.

In terms of clarifying what services private only practices should continue to offer we would summarise this as follows:

  • No routine dentistry should be provided.
  • Triage via telephone should continue to be provided to your patients prescribing pain relief and antibiotics as appropriate.
  • Patients not displaying any signs of COVID-19 requiring emergency treatment can be seen at the practice but no aerosol generating procedures (AGP) should be undertaken. Measures to ensure social distancing must be in place and appropriate robust PPE as described in the red notice must be used.
  • Patients displaying symptoms of COVID-19 requiring emergency care or patients with no symptoms but requiring AGP treatment should be referred to the community urgent access centres, details of how to contact the centres in each health board can be found here.

Support and advice for businesses struggling to cope with the impact of the Coronavirus crisis is available on the Welsh Government and Business Wales websites:

You will appreciate that this is a very fast moving issue and these restrictions will be reviewed on a regular basis.
