GloWorks

First tenants announced for GloWorks – the Welsh Government’s new centre for creative industries in Cardiff Bay

Boom Pictures and Sequence, two major players in the creative industry sector in Wales, are to become the first tenants at GloWorks - Welsh Government’s new flagship centre located on the waterfront in the heart of Porth Teigr, Cardiff Bay.

Boom Pictures is taking over the top three floors to house 110 staff while Sequence is taking over the second floor to accommodate fifty staff members.
Booms Pictures co-founder Huw Eurig Davies said: “To be located at this exciting new development will undoubtedly be a further boost to our company’s creativity and long-term success."

Paul Thomas, Director of Sales & Marketing at Sequence said: “We anticipate that the move will help us grow the business with the potential to create more jobs and attract the best talent in the area".

GloWorks offers space for creative businesses and start-ups to work in collaboration together and create new job opportunities for young talent in Wales.

Da Vinci

Da Vinci’s Demons are back

Da Vinci’s Demons is back and began filming on 23 June in Wales.

The high end US television drama is a fictional account of Leonardo da Vinci's early life. The show is developed and produced in collaboration with BBC worldwide and is shot on location in Swansea, Neath Port Talbot and Margam Park.

The UK premiere of the final episode of season two was screened at the National Museum of Wales on 3 June 2014.

Jane Tranter, Head of Adjacent Productions said: "The international success of Da Vinci's Demons is due in no small part to the supremely talented production talent based in Wales helping us make a world class drama series for the international audience.

“The support given to Da Vinci’s Demons by the Welsh Government and local businesses has played a vital role in the show's continued success and I am thrilled that we are returning for a third series. Proof indeed that investment in talent is investment in the future.”

Take Down unveiled as first film to receive funding from £30m Wales Media Investment Budget

The first feature film to receive investment through the Welsh Government’s new £30m Media Investment Budget has been unveiled by Pinewood Studios.

The feature film, which stars Ed Westwick (Gossip Girl), Jeremy Sumpter (Peter Pan, Soul Surfer) and Phoebe Tonkin (The Vampires Diaries), has been made possible by the Welsh Government’s Media Investment Budget.  Shot in Wales and the Isle of Man the story centres on a a group of students at a boarding school for troubled rich kids. They take matters into their own hands after the campus is taken hostage by criminals.

Welsh Government’s £30m Media Investment Budget is available for UK qualifying film and high-end television production, through Pinewood Pictures, Pinewoods film and television investment vehicle.  UK qualifying productions are required to shoot 50% of principal photography in Wales.

MIPCOM Cannes, 13-16 October 2014

MIPCOM is a global event that attracts entertainment content across all platforms.

The event boasts networking with key decision makers and gives the opportunity to find co-production partners and finance projects.

Last years event saw 13,500 participants, 1,700 exhibiting companies, and 4,600+ buyers from over 100 countries.

The DO Lectures Did it again

The DO Lectures held in Cardigan over four days has once again exceeded expectations. 150 people from as far as Australia, USA, Germany, Argentina, and the Netherlands made the journey to west Wales. The event, supported by Welsh Government, has been described as “the best event I have ever been to”, “totally life changing” and “mind blowing” from the participants of the event.

David Hieatt, Co-Founder DO Lectures says: “Never underestimate the power of a small event. Especially when it is world class”.

And that it is, with The DO Lectures becoming increasingly established not only in Wales, but worldwide in USA and Australia.

Digital Innovation Week Wales

Digital Innovation Week Wales was a week-long programme which celebrated the major digital opportunities for the creative industries sector in Wales.

The highlights included: Thursday 10 July - Practical Takeaways brought a one day seminar for digital creative businesses.  The seminar provided advice on expanding outside of Wales as well as exploiting Intellectual Property.

Friday 11 July - Wales Games Development Show featured 2 exhibition halls, a huge networking area and the BAFTA Cymru Games Awards. Highlights of the day included a session with Gary Napper from Creative Assembly, a UK Interactive Entertainment panel and BAFTA Games Question Time.

dylathon

The Dylathon

The Dylathon is a 36 hour non-stop, star-studded marathon reading of Dylan Thomas' works live on stage at Swansea Grand Theatre from 11am Sunday 26th until 11pm Monday 27th October.

A mixture of celebrities including Michael Sheen, Rob Brydon, Ruth Jones, David Emanuel, Ruth Madoc, Greta Scacchi, Melanie Walters, Sian Phillips, Mal Pope and Jonathan Pryce will perform all the major poems, short stories, letters and broadcasts including Under Milk Wood.

They will be joined by household names from media, film, theatre, politics, literature, music and sport together with local school children, Welsh choirs and youth and community groups.

The Dylathon will create a lasting legacy for young people in Wales.
