Transition to Further Education and/or Training For Learner Who Have ALN
ColegauCymru have developed two helpful new resources to support smooth transition from school to further education for learners with ALN. The materials are designed specifically for school ALNCos and have been shared with local authorities and FE partners.
The guides provide clear, practical advice on when to start planning, who to involve, and what information to share to help learners and families feel confident about their next steps. They also highlight best practice on person‑centred reviews, information‑sharing, and supporting young people with more complex needs.

Review of ALN advocacy provision in Wales
An independent review of additional learning needs advocacy provision across Wales is currently underway. The review will take place in three stages:
- Desktop research to examine current advocacy provision and practice in Wales, including engagement with key stakeholders and analysis of existing evidence.
- Mapping current practice across Wales, covering ALN and wider sectors such as children’s social care.
- Publication of a final report in the spring outlining key findings, areas for development, and clear options and recommendations for future action.
Estyn Post 16 reports
In autumn 2025, Estyn published two reports on the implementation of the post‑16 sector.
The Thematic Review of Independent Living Skills (ILS) provision in Further Education in Wales. It recognises notable improvements to Independent Living Skills (ILS) provision since the last report on it in 2017, especially in personalising learning and improving collaboration.
There are recommendations for FEIs, local authorities, and Welsh Government to strengthen ALN reform.
Alongside this, Estyn prepared an Insight Report on the implementation of post-16 aspects of ALN reform in FEIs, which takes a broader view of ALN provision in further education. This report includes self-reflection questions for colleges which was be published shortly after the thematic review.
The National Year of Reading is a UK-wide campaign and in Wales the bilingual campaign will build on work already underway to support schools, learners and families, to improve literacy standards and nurture a lasting habit of enjoying reading. The campaign will encourage people to ‘Go all in’/ Ymgolli’ and enjoy reading.
The report presents findings from qualitative research for the first year of the Flying Start national evaluation.
