Another day closer to a new Curriculum for Wales

As we approach the end of the feedback phase for the draft Curriculum for Wales, Minister for Education, Kirsty Williams, confirms schools will receive an additional INSET day. See the video from Kirsty Williams here

Learner reports are now available on the assessment site for schools to download. The reports include age-standardised scores and information on progress.

Professional standards for assisting teaching

The professional standards for assisting teaching are now available for use by all teaching assistants and higher level teaching assistants to reflect on their practice and identify professional learning. The standards are part of a range of standards for teachers, leaders and those who assist teaching. 

Statutory guidance for school governing bodies on school uniform and appearance policies

The Welsh Government guidance comes into force from 1 September 2019 and provides clear and useful support for governing bodies in making decisions on school uniform policies in respect of access, affordability and flexibility. 

Early Spring Bank Holiday 2020

Next year’s early May bank holiday will move from Monday 4th to Friday 8th May to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day. Schools should open Monday and close on the Friday and update their calendars to allow parents to plan for the change.   

How was school today? 

The guides explain what children will learn in schools. It includes brief details of what they will be taught, how they will be assessed and how their progress will be measured and reported, together with some tips on how parents and carers can support their child to learn.

The Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol invites schools and further education colleges (that offer Welsh A level - first and second language) to submit applications for grants to promote Welsh as a subject. More information can be found here

Welsh winners celebrated at German Teacher Awards 2019

Two teachers from Wales were honoured at the 2019 German Teacher Awards in a ceremony held at the German Ambassador’s Residence in London on 3 July.  Nicholas Walters, St Paul’s Church in Wales Primary School Cardiff, received a German Teacher Award prize donated by the Austrian Cultural Forum and Deborah Morgan, Osbaston Church in Wales School, Monmouth received a “Special Mention”.  

Open University Short Courses

The Open University in Wales is running free online short courses to help students get a head start in their application to university. Up to 120 places are fully funded by The Open University and open to any students entering Year 12. The modules start in October and will typically run for 21 weeks. For more information contact sarah.e.roberts@open.ac.uk    

Inspire! Tutor Awards 2019

The Learning and Work Institute Inspire! Tutor Awards are a celebration of the impact that tutors have in supporting adult learners to achieve their potential and transform their lives. L&W are looking for nominations for outstanding tutors and mentors in Wales. You have until Monday 7 October to submit your nomination.

Skills Cymru
