Advances Wales Issue 87

The latest Advances highlights new research that could save the northern white rhino from extinction and a digital tool to identify false police statements.

Launch of the Water Test Network (WTN)

The project will establish a transnational network of testing facilities for SMEs in North-West Europe to test, demonstrate and develop new products for the water sector. The Network will issue Innovation Challenges and end users will have the opportunity to submit existing water problems for innovative SMEs to solve.

The Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) Centre of Excellence is being hosted by Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board and funded by the Welsh Government. The Centre aims to work collaboratively to improve health and wellbeing to benefit all within Wales. Find out more

Expertise Wales promote challenges and collaborative opportunities from industry and academia on their website, new opportunities are added on a regular basis.

Current challenges include:

  • Developing ways to re-use, stabilise or recover metals from by-products treatment of contaminated mine water.
  • Initiatives that help to change the current consumer perception of the use of steel cans to package food.

Innovate UK's "Analysis for Innovators" Competition addresses competitiveness and productivity. This could be an issue of precision or accuracy of measurement (e.g. on a production line) that has not been solved using standard available technologies and techniques.
