Christmas Message From the Independent Safeguarding Chair

Dear all,

As we move ever closer to the end of 2023 I wanted to take the opportunity to thank each and every one of you for the time and energy you have dedicated to the success of the Telford and Wrekin Safeguarding Partnership over the last 12 months. It has been a busy year with the launches of both the refreshed Threshold Guidance document and the new Child Exploitation Strategy taking place, an audit around Harmful Sexual Behaviour being undertaken by the NSPCC, the completion of several Child Safeguarding Practice Reviews, and sadly the commencement of a Safeguarding Adults Review along with scooping work on a series of Domestic Homicide Review referrals. Our online ‘lunch and learn’ seminars have continued to take place in partnership with various agencies and November saw our biggest face to face training event being delivered highlighting the importance of Trauma Informed Practice which over 280 professionals attended, alongside a weeks’ worth of Safeguarding Adults Week events.

As always, we have all been faced with challenges but have worked hard together to overcome them and I have no doubt this collective determination will continue into 2024

I wish you a safe and happy Christmas and New Year.

All the best,

Andrew Mason, Independent Chair of the TWSP

Working Together to Safeguard Children Update - Care Leaver Deaths

On Friday 15 December the Department for Education made a set of announcements and publications targeted towards the children’s social care sector, including an update to Working Together to Safeguard Children statutory guidance. Please find the more information here.

As part of this update, we have introduced non-mandatory reporting of care leaver deaths up to age 25 to improve learning and outcomes for this group of young people. From January 2024 local authorities should notify the Secretary of State for Education and Ofsted of the death of a care leaver aged up to their 25th birthday as per the revisions to Working Together to Safeguard Children. Further clarification of the expectation has been sent as part of the Department’s monthly newsletter to local authorities along with this fact sheet.
