Make a difference - stand for election
Last week we highlighted the opportunity May’s parish and district council elections offer to residents who might want to get more involved in local affairs by becoming a councillor.
Our #bacouncillor campaign highlights how individuals can make a real difference in their communities by representing them as a councillor.
Have a listen to Cllr Andy Swain, who represents Kenn Valley ward, explain why he decided to stand for election.
In addition to our ‘Be a councillor’ web pages, the Local Government Association has lots of information on its website for people thinking of becoming a councillor
And we will be running local sessions to outline the role and to answer questions from anyone thinking of putting themselves forward for election – details of these will also be on the website.

Support growing for lottery
It’s just under three weeks until residents can support one of their favourite good causes by buying tickets for the new Teignbridge Community Lottery.
And they will have a choice of at least 28 good causes which have already signed up to take part and to have a promotional page on the new Teignbridge Lottery for Communities website.
Although time is tight, it is not too late for good causes to get involved. If you know of any who might be interested please encourage them to be part of this new fund-raising initiative and to sign up via the website.
As some interested good causes were unable to make the 28 September launch event, Teignbridge Community and Voluntary Services (CVS) is holding two further sessions to share information about the Lottery, answer any questions and show organisations how to sign up and be one of the beneficiary good causes.
Both sessions will be delivered on zoom – links will be sent out nearer the sessions to those who sign up via Eventbrite using the following links:
The website is also where residents go to buy their lottery tickets and these will be on sale from 1 November with the first draw being held on 3 December.

We want to hear from rural businesses
Following last month’s announcement by the Government of ‘A Rural England Prosperity Fund’ Teignbridge has been awarded some £600,000 to help counter the challenges rural businesses often face such as lower productivity rates, poor connectivity and reduced access to key services.
We are keen to engage with rural business owners/managers and community leaders to discover how we can best use this funding to boost job opportunities and economic prosperity.
A consultation event in Newton Abbot is being organised and rural businesses are encouraged to get involved by emailing EconomyandAssets@teignbridge.gov.uk providing an email address which we can use to invite them when arrangements are finalised
This funding, which is part of the levelling up agenda, will aim to support rural business and communities and we would welcome representatives from both to the consultation event.
Further information about the fund is available on the government’s website.
Business properties to let
If you know of a business that is looking for new quality premises with good car parking and transport links, please draw to their attention the three offices we have to let at the Teignbridge Business Centre which is just off the A38 at Heathfield.
The units to let are of different sizes and anyone interested can get more details on our Commercial Property To Let And For Sale website page or on Zoopla

Covid and Flu jab eligibility expanded
The NHS announced yesterday that millions of people aged 50 and over are now able to book their autumn COVID-19 booster and flu online or by phone.
Around 33 million people in England will be eligible for a free flu vaccine this year, including all primary-age and some secondary-age children, who will be offered a nasal spray.
Approximately 26 million people are eligible for an autumn Covid-19 booster, with health leaders warning of a ‘twindemic’ of the two illnesses this winter and have urged people to come forward for their jabs.
The NHS says that record numbers of sites are delivering the autumn boosters, while the flu jab is being offered at thousands of community pharmacies and GP surgeries across England.
Flu vaccinations can be booked through GP practices or by visiting a participating community pharmacy. Anyone needing help can call 119.
You can find out more online, including details of who is eligible for both flu and Covid-19 jabs.

Waste reduction project is reducing carbon and building strong communities
Volunteer waste reduction groups across Mid Devon and Teignbridge are ‘thriving’ thanks to our Community Action Groups Devon (CAG Devon) project.
The project, which is funded by Devon County Council and managed by Resource Futures, has helped these groups more than double the amount of carbon that they have prevented from going into the atmosphere.
Together their actions have increased carbon dioxide emissions saved from 60.6 tonnes to 139 tonnes, equivalent to the electricity needed to support 100 homes for a year.
CAG food projects have saved over 32 tonnes of food from waste, equivalent to 40 supermarket delivery vans full of food, enough to feed a family of four for 10 years.

Teignbridge features in prime time TV show location
Eagle-eyed Teignbridge residents may well have spotted a local landmark on a new BBC prime time series which hit our screens last Thursday with the second airing last night.
Unbreakable is a new celebrity game show filmed in and around Teignbridge, with the stunning Ugbrooke House providing the main location, along with nearby iconic landmarks such as Ness Beach, which provided the backdrop for some of the challenges set.
Hosted by comedian Rob Becket, the six-part show sees celebrity couples take part in a series of mental, physical and emotional challenges designed to test even the strongest of relationships, under the expert eye of relationship coaches Anjula Mutanda and Maria McErlane who analyse and score the way the couples collaborate and communicate, and the couple scoring the lowest each week is eliminated.
You can watch the Unbreakable series on BBC iPlayer.

Help wanted this weekend to monitor state of rivers, streams and canals
The Autumn Water Watch is asking people to survey rivers, streams and canals as part of a first ever national monitoring project. Over this weekend (14-16 October) people are being asked to visit their local river, lake or stream and spend up to 15 minutes observing the surroundings, using the Planet Patrol app to guide what indicators you look for, and record all your findings in the planet patrol app.
A short planet patrol video explains how to get involved.
