Happy August Bermondsey and Rotherhithe!

It's all happening here this summer and I hope that you have been out and about enjoying the wonderful sunshine and the great events happening around the borough but especially in Bermondsey and Rotherhithe! We have had some rain -  our gardens did need it and we are certainly a lot cooler.

Soon the children will be back to school and I know that there are lots of preparations going on for that. So my encouragement for you is to enjoy the last few weeks of summer that is left! Details are below on summer activities in the area and across the borough. The Bede Centre is having its annual fun day this Wednesday 22 August starting at 12 noon. The Chinese Food Festival is on the 31 August for 3 days, The Farm Festival  & The Bermondsey Folk Festival are both on the 8th September. The Bermondsey Street Festival is back on Saturday 15 September from 11am. Also, Southwark Stars 2018 Nominations are now open! Details are at the end.

I have done my best to include as much information below on what is happening in Bermondsey and Rotherhithe and in the borough as possible. We have a few job opportunities and funding opportunities coming. The Neighbourhoods Fund and Cleaner, Greener, Safer grant schemes will be opening soon so look out for the details of that in the press, via Facebook pages, twitter feeds and newsletters.

Don't forget your next Community Council Forum Meeting will be Saturday 8th September at the City Hope Church at 121 Drummond Road, SE16 2JY. It will be on Community Safety and it is Time for a Conversation. The details are below. We are looking forward to seeing you all out to have this conversation out in the open and to arrive at some solutions driven by the you, the community, on this very important issue that affects us all. We would especially like to see more of the younger members of our community as they are especially affected so please bring them along and let them know that we are listening.

There is also a tour of the Biscuit Factory site being hosted by Grosvenor, who are the developers. Please see the link below to sign up for that via eventbrite. There will also be the opportunity to have a more in depth conversation with Grosvenor at the Community Council Forum meeting at 3:15pm when the meeting will open up for a Q&A session with Grosvenor specifically about the site.

https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/grosvenors-tour-of-the-biscuit-factory-tickets-49178367822?utm_term=eventurl_text

So on the 8th September, I will be going to the Farm, then doing the Biscuit Factory Tour, then the BRCC Meeting and last of all the Folk Festival on the Blue! It will be a fantastic day!

As usual, please keep in touch with your events, news, ideas, suggestions! All Welcome! I am still waiting on pictures from recent events so please send them in!

Have a wonderful rest of the month and a great start to September!

Back the Bakerloo 2Extension pic

London called on to ‘Back the Bakerloo’ line extension

10 August 2018

Two south London councils are calling on Londoners from across the city to ‘Back the Bakerloo’ and show their support for the southern extension of the tube line.

Southwark and Lewisham Councils have joined together to launch the campaign to get the whole city behind the plans.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has committed to extending the Bakerloo line through Southwark and Lewisham, which will dramatically improve transport links - relieving the load on the bus and Overground network, and make the wider South London area more accessible than it’s ever been before.

The extension will also deliver thousands of new homes, including affordable homes, and jobs, supporting the local economy and helping tackle London’s housing crisis.
Southwark and Lewisham Councils have been campaigning for the Bakerloo line extension for a number of years, both to improve transport in the boroughs and to help build much-needed new homes.

Cllr Johnson Situ, cabinet member for growth, development and planning at Southwark Council, said: “’I’m backing the Bakerloo because the extension will make a huge difference to people living and working in Old Kent Road, as well as bringing wider benefits to London.
“There will be a new town centre along one of London’s most famous thoroughfares – Old Kent Road – and the extension is key to delivering more affordable homes, jobs and services to this part of London and opening up new opportunities for people across the city.”

If you want to find out more about the plans for the Bakerloo Line Extension, and to show your support for the campaign, go to www.backthebakerloo.org.uk

Rotherhithe to Canary Wharf Crossing Update from Tfl- Response to issues raised report

They will continue to develop their proposals for a new crossing and are planning to consult again later this year, where they will present their latest proposals and more detailed information on a preferred crossing.

Fun and games in Elephant this summer

CLC

The Castle Leisure Centre’s new Holiday Activity Camp is adding to Southwark Council’s fun packed offer of sports, crafts and games for children in the borough this summer.

Cllr Rebecca Lury visited a session this week and met some of the children, who were playing a Peter Pan themed running game.

The Fit for Sport programme offers a vast range of activities and focuses on the importance of children being able to have fun outdoors. Children in Southwark can chose from multi-sports to messy arts and crafts, from outdoor adventures to weekly themed activities, each day offers something completely unique, but equally exciting for children aged five to 12 years old.

Cllr Rebecca Lury said: “It was lovely to meet the children and learn about the fun they’ve been having. It is so important that children can be supported and helped to grow into happy, confident young people and be encouraged to lead healthy and active lives, this programme holds these values at its core.”

Find out what other summer holiday activities the council is offering near you, by visiting www.southwark.gov.uk/summer for more information.

JOB CORNER!

Time & Talents

Fun and Friendship for Rotherhithe Kids

131 years-young, Time & Talents is a small, energetic, and growing community charity based in Rotherhithe and Bermondsey. Our vision is of a world where everyone feels part of a community - and that includes kids!

In order to help make that a reality, we are expanding our work with children and families 0-10 as part of a new Children In Need-funded project, ‘Closing the Gaps for Rotherhithe Kids.’ We’re looking for someone who can set up and deliver a range of fun activities, which help kids get active, develop their emotional and learning skills, and build better relationships with their peers, across the boundaries of culture and socio-economic background.

Children’s Creative Play Officer (0.6FTE) £26k pro-rata

We’re looking for a qualified children's worker with the skills, experience, and personality to run and support a lively programme of fun, educational, activities for children 0-10 years old.

You’ll need creative ideas, a huge amount of enthusiasm, and be just as comfortable getting kids dancing, making pancakes, or digging in the garden as getting messy with glue, or pretending to be superheroes. Trips out to London cultural spots will also be a key part of the work.

You’ll have experience of working with children in the age range, running fun, creative, educational and play activities in an informal environment. You’ll need to have an early years, playwork, or teaching qualification, and understand that pretending to be a pirate or an astronaut presents huge opportunities for learning and development for young minds.  We are particularly interested in hearing from those with primary school teaching qualifications who might enjoy working in a more flexible and informal, play-centred community environment. You'll also need experience of running trips/ outings, and of working with vulnerable or at risk children.

Healthwatch Southwark and Southwark LGBT Network Borough Consultation 2018

Healthwatch Southwark is partnering with the Southwark LGBT Network to deliver a borough wide survey on the needs of the LGBTQ+ community in Southwark. We hope to share the findings with you in February 2019. This is the first major LGBTQ+ survey of its kind in Southwark.

As a very important and populous group in the borough, we want to ensure that the needs of seldom heard communities in the borough are fully realised. The results will be used to hold services to account concerning local needs and help us create priority areas of work.

We want to ensure that your voices are heard by local services to create a better Southwark for you to live in.

We want to know what life is like for LGBTQ+ people living in Southwark especially around health. That’s why we’ve organised this survey. It includes questions that we think are relevant to LGBTQ+ people and that will help us better understand local needs.

For more information and to complete the survey, click here.

To answer this survey, you must be:

  • Aged 16 or over; and
  • Live in Southwark.
