May half-term activities

Kids Art Activities Art Gallery

Just over a week to go until May half-term! Whether you need an all-day activity club for your child, or you want to spend an hour together creating something fun in one of our venues, we've got it covered. Here's what's on:

  • Kids’ Culture Club – Space day! | SeaCity Museum | 9am-5pm. Head to a Galaxy far, far away and hunt your own bounty! With lots of fun activities to keep all budding bounty hunters amused. For children aged 6 to 12yrs.  Find out more
  • WW2 Super Science Family Fun (7+) | Tudor House & Garden| 10.30am, 1pm. A super-charged session of experiments and history based around the World War II! Create egg parachutes, design your own 'gas masks' and more. Find out more

Wed 1 June

  • Star Wars Pencil Pots | Southampton City Art Gallery | 10:15am, 11:45am, 1:30pm. Make a brilliant pencil pot by upcycling a coffee pot into your favourite Star Wars character. Find out more
  • Wizard School (6+) | Tudor House & Garden | 10:30am, 12pm, 1:30pm. Create your very own magic wand, witness magic and search for the magical characters in the Tudor House garden. Find out more

There's also our brilliant Mini Monets (4-6yrs) and Young Ones (7-13yrs) art clubs running, where kids' will get to experiment with different art materials, processes and ideas; inspired by the Gallery's collection and the current exhibitions on show.

Open Exhibition submission deadline

Southampton City Art Gallery's Open Exhibition submission deadline is 16 – 18 June

We are inviting everyone to submit a piece of art responding to the question 'What does culture mean to you?'

Entrants are encouraged to consider the theme of culture as creatively and widely as possible, and can submit work in both 2-D and 3-D form in any medium including painting, photography, drawing, original prints, mixed media, textile, sculpture and video. The successful artists will have their work exhibited at Southampton City Art Gallery from 2 July – 10 September 2022.

Kurt Jackson

Kurt Jackson - BiodiversityFriday 27 May | 5pm | Southampton City Art Gallery | £5

Join Kurt Jackson as he discusses the work on display in his new exhibition of paintings, found objects and sculptures. These works were made in locations across the UK, including the New Forest and south coast, and reflect the specific biodiversity in each area.

Life drawing with Brian Reynalds | 4 June - 3 Dec | 11am - 4pm | Southampton City Art Gallery

Work at your own pace with individual feedback and tuition on hand as required from tutor Brian Reynolds in these relaxed and friendly Saturday sessions. You are very welcome to bring your own drawing materials, although we will supply the basics.

Explore drawing in pencil, pastel & pen at this relaxed and friendly course; suitable for beginners and those looking to refresh their skills. Each week we will learn the basics of drawing skills including mark making & blending techniques in mediums such as graphite, pastel & pen. You'll also learn about the artists who worked with these versatile mediums, and we will look at themes like still life, botanicals & more.

Join a creative group for grownups. Each month artist and teacher Sarah L Goy will guide you to discover different media in a relaxing and exploratory way. All are welcome and all materials are provided.

Crafty workshops

Willow Bird Feeders | 12 June | 10.30am - 3pm | Tudor House

Join Tudor House’s artist in residence, willow sculptor Jaqueline Rolls, to create your own stunning bird feeder from willow. Enjoy this relaxing and traditional art overlooking the Tudor House Garden, while you are guided through the process of working with willow to make two different woven bird feeders, a willow cone and a willow spiral.

Wire Flowers Sculptures | 15 July | 10.30am - 1pm | Southampton City Art Gallery

Try your hand at wire sculptures in these brilliantly creative seasonal workshops led by artist Liza Morgan. These workshops are suitable for all levels of ability and those aged 12 years plus.

Join local historian and guide Andy Skinner for this brand new walking tour in the Old Town. This tour will explore areas of the town 'off the beaten track', including medieval vaults not usually accessible to the public.
