Healthwatch Publishes Report on Experiences with Local NHS Psychological Services

Shropshire Healthwatch and Telford & Wrekin Healthwatch have heard from patients of the Shropshire Primary Care Psychological Therapies Service (also known as IAPT) and Telford IAPT.

These services are at the forefront of support and therapy to help people to deal with mild and moderate depression and anxiety. The NHS is looking at how these services are organised and are keen to understand people’s experiences.

Healthwatch heard that the most positive aspects of the services were the quality of staff and therapy. The aspects which received most negative feedback were the waiting times and communication with the services.

Lynn Cawley, Chief Officer of Healthwatch Shropshire, said:-

“We knew that depression and anxiety levels in Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin have increased since the start of the pandemic. We wanted to hear from patients and ensure that their voice was at the centre of any service development.”

Frances Sutherland, Head of Transformation and Commissioning (Mental health, LD & A) Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin Integrated Care System, said:-

“We are currently reviewing our IAPT services and how they function. We are undertaking a change and efficiency project to harmonise our services across Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and aim to build on the good practices already established, developing areas in need of improvement. We would like to thank all the respondents for their honest comments and we will use the report to support service development further.”

Barry Parnaby, Chair of Healthwatch Telford & Wrekin, said:-

“We asked for patients to give us suggestions on how the service can be improved and are very pleased to know that the IAPT services are looking at these as they consider how to improve services.”

Local Healthwatch services in Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin are currently being reviewed. See Engagement Opportunities below to have your say on the future of Healthwatch in the county by 5th September.

new cancer information app screen

SaTH Launches New Cancer App

People living with and beyond cancer can benefit from support and advice at their fingertips thanks to a new app launched by The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH).

The “Living With & Beyond Cancer App” is free and has been developed by local NHS cancer specialists. It has been designed with local people in mind and is aimed at anybody affected by cancer and those who support people with cancer, including carers and professionals.

The app contains information for the areas of Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin, and Powys on:

  • The Princess Royal and Royal Shrewsbury hospitals
  • The teams you might meet
  • Events happening near you
  • A contact directory
  • Good news stories
  • How to access community support

There’s also more general help and advice about treatments, side-effects, psychological support, health and wellbeing, and finance.

The app was recently shortlisted in three categories for the Patient Experience Network National Awards: Innovative Use of Technology, Social & Digital Media; Personalisation of Care; Cancer Experience of Care.

Dr John Jones, Medical Director at SaTH, said:

“I would like to congratulate and thank everyone involved in bringing this innovative app to fruition. It has a wealth of information for those living with cancer, and those supporting them, and marks another step forward in improving the quality and experience of care that we are providing.”

Jessica Greenwood, Strategic Lead for Cancer for Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and Lead Cancer Nurse at SaTH, said:

“There is so much support available for people living with and beyond cancer, but it can be hard to know where to start. Cancer can affect so many aspects of a person’s life, as well as their family’s, so they often need more than just clinical support. This app brings everything together in one place.

It has been a real team effort, with patients, clinicians, local NHS organisations, charities, including Lingen Davies and Macmillan, all getting involved to bring the app to life.

We hope that people find this app really helpful on their cancer journey and we would welcome any feedback on 01743 492424 or by emailing us.”

Leah Morgan, Cancer Survivorship Improvement Facilitator at SaTH, added:

“We are delighted to have developed this app and are so pleased with the potential it has to support anyone affected by cancer. We’ve been working on this for well over a year and we’re so proud that it’s finally launched. People are already making great use of it and telling us how helpful it is on their cancer journey.”

The “Living With & Beyond Cancer App” which is available 24/7 is free to use now on Apple and Android devices. To download it, install the MyHealthBoost app and search for SaTH Cancer Services.

More information, including a full download guide, is available on the SaTH website.

Latest 'Donor Pulse' Report Shows Link Between Cost of Living and Charitable Giving

The latest Donor Pulse report from Enthuse finds a link between the increasingly difficult financial position of the public and their ability to donate to charities.

"55% of people saying they now find it harder to donate to good causes than they did six months ago," the report states. What's more, they find that "78% of those who are struggling financially have reduced or halted their charitable giving."

Despite this, overall giving is still "remaining robust, with 74% of the public having given to charity in the past three months."

The report also considers what works and what doesn't from the public's perspective in fundraising events.

Star News Shop – Church Street, Bishop’s Castle

Former Newsagent Transformed Into Community Venue With Community Asset Grant Scheme

Further to a successful funding bid to Shropshire Council, Community Asset Grant Scheme money has been awarded to the Bishop’s Castle & District Community Land Trust, which will help in the creation of an informal drop-in venue at the heart of Bishop’s Castle for the local community.

The former Stars News Shop at 68-70 Church Street has been disused since 2015, but now after more than five years of neglect this building will be able to provide a welcoming meeting place for a wide variety of local groups.

These include the Bishop’s Castle Befriending Circle and in collaboration with Enterprise Southwest Shropshire, this will become a digital learning centre, helping those within the community gain support to access technology. The grant awarded by Shropshire Council, together with match funding, will allow the Trust to build a shopfront with disabled access, provide IT equipment for digital learning, a display area, seating and desks for customers.

The Bishop’s Castle & District Community Land Trust are a community-managed project responsible for renovating and developing this building into an asset for the benefit of the people of Bishop’s Castle and the wider area.  The Trusts objective is to create an important base for a wide variety of local groups and services, part of a wellbeing collective that brings the voluntary, community, and social enterprise sectors together.

Jenny Olivant a member of the Bishop’s Castle Michaelmas fair committee, describes the importance of this venue as follows –

"The Bishop’s Castle Michaelmas fair will return on 17 September after a two-year break, in what will be its twenty-fifth year.

The event is a one-day street fair, traditionally held at the end of harvest, which involves a variety of entertainment, music and street traders alongside processions of vintage cars and steam engines.

The event draws people in from across the region and relies upon the good faith of volunteers to make it a success. The newly formed community space is situated in an ideal location to run the event from and will enact as an information point on the day.

This year we are planning to utilise the space behind the venue to set up a food court for visitors to enjoy. We hope to expand the event in future years and the new space on Church Street will play a pivotal in bringing the community together."

Community groups across Shropshire have received grant funding totalling more than £140,000 to boost their recovery following the pandemic. The Community Asset Fund is a government funded pilot scheme as part of the Additional Restrictions Grant (ARG), which aims to provide funding support in the aftermath of COVID-19. The design of the pilot grant scheme to benefit community assets is thanks in large part to a VCSA-led discussion with voluntary and community partners to make recommendations about the best ways to target the ARG funds.
