Gleadless Valley Regeneration Updates

This June edition of the Gleadless Valley Regeneration Newsletter is dedicated to the memory of Max Richardson, who sadly passed away in May 2026.
He was a dedicated member of the Gleadless Valley Tenants and Residents Association (GV TARA) for more than 50 years and also served as a valued member of the Gleadless Valley Regeneration Board.
Max made an enormous contribution to the local community through his commitment, knowledge and passion for Gleadless Valley. His dedication to improving Gleadless Valley and ensuring the voices of local residents were heard will be remembered with gratitude by all who knew and worked with him.
Spotswood Green Space Update

The new green space at Spotswood is now in its final stages, with many of the main features already in place. New paths have been completed, seating has been installed and landscaping work is well underway. The space is beginning to show how it will look once finished and will provide a welcoming place for residents to enjoy.
The project has taken longer than expected and we know this has been frustrating for some residents. We are sorry for the delay. We now expect the work to be completed by the end of June.
Local children helped come up with ideas for the name of the new green space and nearby residents have recently been invited to choose their favourite from a shortlist of six names.
In partnership with the GV TARA, we are also holding a community event on 22 August (see details in 'Events' section below) to celebrate the opening of the space and look forward to welcoming local residents.
Young People share their views on Gleadless Valley
Earlier this year, students from Newfield School took part in a six-week project to learn about the Gleadless Valley Regeneration Programme and how local decisions are made.
Working with the Regeneration Team and Regather, the students explored issues that matter to young people and gathered views from their classmates. They then presented their ideas and recommendations directly to the Gleadless Valley Regeneration Board, sharing what young people think about life in Gleadless Valley with local leaders and decision-makers.

The students spoke about issues such as anti-social behaviour, fly-tipping, speeding traffic, community safety and the local environment. Board members praised the students for their ideas and the way they presented their work.
The Board agreed that the students' feedback should lead to real action. The Regeneration Team and local partners are now reviewing the issues raised and will provide updates on how these views are helping to shape future work in Gleadless Valley.
This project is part of our ongoing work to make sure young people's voices help shape the future of Gleadless Valley.

Environmental Stewards making a difference

The Gleadless Valley Environmental Steward Team continues to make a real difference across the Valley, helping to improve local green spaces and keep the area looking its best.
The team, which includes local trainees, carries out a range of work including clearing overgrown areas, improving footpaths and helping to make public spaces safer and more welcoming for residents.
Recently, supervisor Shaun was recognised with a Supportive Employer Award from Sheaf Training. The award celebrates his dedication to helping young people learn new skills and gain valuable experience in the workplace.
The Regeneration Team would like to congratulate Shaun on this achievement and thank the whole Environmental Steward Team for their hard work and commitment to Gleadless Valley.
Gleadless Valley Regeneration Team - paths and steps clearance
The Gleadless Valley Regeneration Team has been helping to improve local paths and steps through litter picking and clearance work across the Valley.

When Kerry Allen noticed a neglected patch of land near her home in Gleadless Valley, she decided to do something about it. After clearing the litter and cutting back the overgrown bushes, her neighbours soon joined in, donating plants, paving slabs and painted rocks to help transform the space.
Today, the area is a colourful community garden that changes with the seasons and even includes a little book bank made by Kerry and her children. It's a great example of how one person's idea can bring neighbours together and make a lasting difference to the local community.

Spotswood Green Space Opening Celebration
Saturday 22 August from 2pm to 6pm at the New Green Space, Spotswood Mount, S14 1LG
Join us as we celebrate the opening of Gleadless Valley's new green space, soon to be named by local residents.
There'll be family activities, music, entertainment, refreshments and lots more. Bring your friends and family and help us celebrate this exciting new space for the community.
Family Fun Sessions at Herdings Park
Community Recreation has fun activities planned for July.
Join them for sports, team games, traditional play and family fun on the following dates:
- Tuesday 2 July from 3pm to 4.30pm
- Thursday 9 July from 3pm to 4.30pm
- Saturday 18 July from 1pm to 3pm
- Friday 24 July from 4pm to 6pm
- Tuesday 18 July from 1pm to 3pm
- Friday 31 July from 4pm to 6pm
If you have bulky items to get rid of and can’t get to the recycling centre, a free skip will be available.
We’ll also be litter picking, so feel free to come along, dispose of your unwanted items and say hello.

New for 2026: “The Hang Out” - Valley Youth Hub
Tuesdays from 5pm to 7pm at Callow Hub, Callow Place, Sheffield S14 1PL
In an exciting new development, Valley Youth Hub is launching “The Hang Out”, a weekly youth session designed for young people aged 8 to 18.
This new provision is packed with activities aimed at giving young people freedom to explore their interests, try new things, and meet friends in a safe environment. Sessions will include:
- Gaming
- DJing
- Singing
- Cooking
- Computing
… and plenty more.
After a young person’s first visit, they are welcome to attend and leave independently, giving older participants more autonomy while still being supported by experienced youth workers.
