We are now seeing a rapid increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in Rotherham. The current seven-day case rate for Rotherham is 1,081.6 per 100,000 which is more than double of the rate from last week (547.2 per 100,000). This is the highest COVID-19 case rate we have recorded in Rotherham since the pandemic began.
We have also seen a rise in the number of people in hospital with COVID-19. Currently there are 67 inpatients with COVID in Rotherham Hospital, and we are beginning to see pressure building on our local health services, with some elective procedures planning on being delayed. It is also impacting on social care, due to the levels of transmission and subsequent outbreaks in care homes and again will impact upon how services may need to be delivered or delayed.
This is following a national trend. Across the UK, the national 7-day case rate is 1,238.6 per 100,000. Over the past few weeks, we have seen new records of daily cases being set with 183,037 being reported on Wednesday 29 December 2021. Nationally, there are over 8,000 people in hospital due to COVID-19.
As we move into the New Year, it is important that we all do our bit to protect ourselves and our loved ones from the virus.
You can do this by:
- Getting your COVID-19 vaccinations and booster as soon as possible.
- Getting a lateral flow test before you meet with people, and stay at home if you test positive.
- Wearing a face covering in crowded places or when in close contact with people outside your own household
- Washing your hands and wipe down surfaces often.
- If you have guests, avoid close contact where possible and open a window or a door for at least ten minutes every so often to let fresh air in. This will help dispel any COVID particles in the air.
Further advice is available online

Lateral Flow Tests
If you are meeting with family or friends, you should get a lateral flow test before you meet with them. This will help you know if you are carrying the virus so that you don’t pass it onto your loved ones.
If you test positive, remember you must stay at home and self-isolate right away. You must also get a PCR test to confirm your result.
All Rotherham Libraries are closed until Tuesday 4 January which means you will not be able to pick up lateral flow tests from these venues. However, there are other places you can get your lateral flow test from:
- A local pharmacy (New Year opening times may apply)
- Rotherham leisure centres (New Year opening times may apply)
- Through the home delivery service
Further information about where to get your lateral flow tests from is available on the Rotherham Council website
