Remember the fallen and respect others by wearing a face covering at Remembrance events

RBL face covering

With large crowds expected to gather at Remembrance Sunday events across the borough this weekend, people attending are being asked to wear face coverings to help protect themselves and others.

Remembrance Sunday events traditionally attract large number of people in Rotherham, including many older veterans, so please wear a face covering as well as your poppy when you're in close proximity to others.

To reduce the Covid risk and encourage the continued involvement of older veterans, this year's Remembrance Sunday civic event will be held entirely outdoors in the beautiful surroundings of Clifton Park, with a shorter, flatter parade route.

The parade will begin from the top of Clifton Park at 10.35am and make its way down to the Cenotaph, with uniformed groups, veterans and organisations taking part.

This will be followed by a service and the two minute silence, led by the Reverend Phil Batchford from Rotherham Minster.

For a full running order and further information, visit the Council's website.

Local Remembrance events are also taking place are also taking place in other locations across the borough, at:

  • Thrybergh
  • Maltby
  • Wath
  • Bramley
  • Anston

Grab a jab - 13 Nov

Grab a jab sessions on Saturday 13th November

Two Grab-a-Jab sessions are taking place tomorrow (13th November) for people who have not had their first or second dose, or who are eligible for a booster / third dose of the vaccine.

The sessions are taking place at:

  • Health Village, Doncaster Gate, Rotherham – AstraZeneca and Pfizer Session – 10am to 12noon
  • Rawmarsh Customer Service Centre - Pfizer Session - 4pm to 5pm

No appointment is necessary to attend these sessions, but please ensure you are eligible before attending.

Remember, you will be invited to get your booster / third jab when it is your turn (at least 182 days after your second dose).

For those who have already received their first dose, please note that you will receive your second dose around 8 -12 weeks after receiving your first. Current guidance is that healthy 16 and 17 year olds will only receive one dose of the COVID vaccine.

You must wear a face covering when attending Grab-a-Jab sessions (visors are not permitted). You will also need to bring ID for proof of age and you may need to queue at busy periods.

You are advised to eat and drink before your jab and bringing a bottle of water with you is always a good idea.

Boosters

The Covid infection rate in people aged over 60 in Rotherham remains much higher than nationally and as immunity can begin to fall, it is essential individuals get their boosters as soon as possible to help protect themselves. Boosters (also called third dose) are available for those aged 50 and over, or with underlying health conditions, for care home residents and health and social care workers.

Your GP will contact you when you become eligible but you also have the option of booking through the NHS website if it is at least 5 months since your second dose.

Further information about the vaccine locally is available on the Your Health Rotherham website.

School Vaccinations

COVID-19 vaccinations in schools will shortly be coming to an end but children aged between 12-15 years old will still be able to book their jab if they have not been able to get it at their school.

Parents of children aged between 12 – 15 years old can still book their children in for their COVID-19 vaccination through the National Booking system. Local centres are now offering appointments.

Covid not gone

Infection rates remain high - Covid's not gone yet

Although the rate of covid infections is currently falling in Rotherham, it is not falling as fast as elsewhere and we are currently ranked 13th highest in the country.

There were 1,291 cases in Rotherham last week - a stark reminder that Covid remains present in our communities.

Everyday steps to keep everyone safe

As we continue to enjoy being able to see family and friends, it is important to remember that there are little things we can do to make a big difference in stopping the spread, such as

Many of the measures we take to protect ourselves from covid, also help to protect us from the rise in winter respiratory viruses that we are now seeing, including regular hand washing.

Flu is on the increase

Flu is now starting to circulate nationally, so it is really important to get your flu vaccine too. You can get your free NHS flu vaccine if you are aged 50 and over, have certain health conditions, live with someone at increased risk, are pregnant, in long-term residential care, as a carer, or frontline health and social care worker.

You can also pay for a flu vaccine if you are not eligible for an NHS vaccine and some employers are supporting this. Flu vaccines are available at GP surgeries, pharmacies, from your midwife or at hospital appointments. Children under 18 can also get the nasal flu vaccine from their GP or through school.

Find a pharmacy that offers the flu vaccine here.

New free digital mental health service for young people

Kooth

Kooth – a new free digital counselling service for children and young people – is now available online.

Rotherham Council has been working with NHS Rotherham CCG to launch the digital counselling and support service to help combat a rising tide of mental health issues in the wake of the pandemic.

The partnership has commissioned Kooth to provide safe and confidential support to children and young people aged between 11 and 25 years of age.

Kooth is available immediately across the Rotherham area - there are no waiting lists or thresholds, which means children and young people can start to use the service once they have registered.

It is British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and can be accessed using a computer, smartphone or tablet device.

Join the over-50s choosing fostering over retirement

Fostering and Adoption

Being over-50 isn't a barrier to you providing a safe, loving home for local children.

There is a huge community of older carers who are helping to improve the lives of children in care.

Rotherham Council is reaching out to grandparents across the borough to raise awareness of fostering. Research from March 2020 suggests that more than half of all foster carers in England are over 50.

So, whether you’ve always wanted to foster or have only just started to think about it, it’s not too late to change the life of a child in Rotherham.

Further information is available from the Fostering Rotherham website.
