Remember, remember, keep safe on the 5 November
With Bonfire Night events and get-togethers over the weekend, you will be wanting to meet up with friends and family and have a good time, but please follow health and safety tips to make sure your night is full of fun and not disaster.
Every year, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service are called out to countless incidents across the borough where bonfires have got out of control or fireworks have gone astray, sometimes resulting in injuries.
Keep safe by remembering these few things:
Bonfire safety
-
Do not build a bonfire close to any houses, trees, sheds, fences and other outbuildings
-
Do not use paraffin, petrol or any other fuel or accelerant on a bonfire
-
Do not burn things like plastic or chemicals
-
Do make sure you have a supply of water nearby to dampen the flames if necessary
Firework safety
- Only buy fireworks from reputable suppliers and ensure they meet safety standards
- Take care when lighting fireworks – keep at arms length away and don’t go back to them once lit
- Never throw fireworks, don’t put them in your pocket and ensure they are not pointing towards people, buildings or trees
- Best practice is to keep fireworks in the box and get them out one at a time
- Be a good neighbour – consider those with pets and remember there are rules around how late you are able to set fireworks off

 Help for our furry friends
For our furry friends, Bonfire Night can be a distressing time. It is estimated that 45% of dogs in the UK are scared of fireworks and many other animals are scared of the noise too.
If you’re looking to have fireworks in your garden, you could choose to have silent fireworks which are available to buy from some suppliers. These help cut down on scary bangs and noises.
If you are a pet owner, the RSPCA have a number of tips to help you calm your furry friends if they are scared of fireworks.

And if you are having a bonfire, check to make sure no wild animals, such as hedgehogs, have hidden in it since you built it.
And lastly, keep safe from COVID
If you’re meeting indoors, make sure your house is well ventilated so that there is less chance of COVID-19 spreading.
For peace of mind, take a lateral flow test before you meet up with friends and relatives. If you test positive, you must stay at home and self-isolate, and get a PCR test right away.
If you feel unwell, don’t chance it. Stay at home and get a test as soon as possible.
Find out more about where to get Lateral Flow Tests from and more tips about keeping safe from COVID on the Council’s website.

Kooth – a new free digital counselling service for children and young people – is now available online!
Rotherham Council has been working with NHS Rotherham CCG to launch the digital counselling and support service to help combat a rising tide of mental health issues in the wake of the pandemic.
The partnership has commissioned Kooth to provide safe and confidential support to children and young people aged between 11 and 25 years of age.
Kooth is available immediately across the Rotherham area - there are no waiting lists or thresholds, which means children and young people can start to use the service once they have registered.
It is British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) accredited and can be accessed using a computer, smartphone or tablet device.

The Lanes Improvements - Read more at www.rotherham.gov.uk/news/article/450/council-home-improvements-cut-residents-fuel-bills-and-carbon-emissions
Residents at The Lanes, East Dene, have been able to save money on their heating bills thanks to new improvements on their homes.
Rotherham Council has fitted new triple glazing and external doors, improved insulation, and replaced old boilers as part of a programme of updates to the properties.
Not only will these updates cut fuel bills by an estimated £323 per household per year, a saving of more than 30 per cent, they will also eliminate approximately 1.5 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.
The improvements were made possible by a £4.2 million investment – including £1.14 million that the Council secured from the Government’s Green Homes scheme.
The programme of work was completed in just six months by the Council’s partner EQUANS, part of the ENGIE Group and saw more than 215 homes retrofitted with triple-glazing and insulated external doors as well as re-sealing and insulating all flat roofs; pitched roof and cavity wall insulation was topped up where necessary. In the 48 homes that still had old central heating boilers, AA-rated, energy-efficient boilers with flue-heat recovery systems were also installed.
