Highbury Nursery designed a room called 'The Rainbow Room' to cater specifically for children with the most complex needs. See below their detailed breakdown of why this provision was essential for them.
Individual learning approach:
Highbury have individual learning plans that cater to each child’s specific requirements. This personalised approach ensures that children receive the appropriate support and resources necessary for their development. For instance, children with communication difficulties may benefit from speech and language therapy integrated into their daily activities, which is often more challenging to provide in their busy rooms.
Supportive learning environment:
Highbury say their Rainbow Room creates an environment that is conducive to learning for children with SEND. Their environment was typically designed to minimise distractions and provide sensory-friendly spaces that help children feel safe and secure. This supportive atmosphere allows their children to engage more fully in their education without the anxiety or stress that might arise in a traditional nursery room.
Positive long-term outcomes:
They have noticed a significant boost in engagement among all the children. They say the nursery atmosphere feels much calmer now that they can better tailor their support to meet each child's needs.
At Highbury they believe children are more likely to achieve better educational outcomes later in life if the early years provisions facilitates early identification and intervention, provides individualised learning approaches, creates supportive environments, fosters collaboration among specialists, builds social skills, adheres to legal requirements for inclusion, and promotes positive long-term outcomes for children with SEND.

Family Hubs are pleased to be offering an extra Triple P discussion group, which focuses on developing a bedtime routine. To reach a wider audience they are offering this discussion group for parents of children from 2 years upwards. Please print the poster at the button below and share with families at your setting.
This discussion topic explores different problems parents commonly face at bedtime and some of the reasons why they happen. The skills children need to get into a good bedtime routine are discussed and parents are introduced to positive parenting strategies to help prevent problems. The approaches to encouraging children to stay in their own bed throughout the night are discussed: the gentle, the gradual, and the direct approach. All approaches are evidence-based and parents choose which approach suits them best. When parents have developed a bedtime routine, the same principles can be used to develop other routines.
The discussion group is taking place on Friday 13 December, 10.00am - 12.30pm at Paulsgrove Family Hub, Cheltenham Road, PO6 3PL. If you know of parents who would benefit and would like to attend, with consent, please let the parenting service know or parents can call the Paulsgrove Family Hub on 023 9288 2588 (select option 6).
Family Hubs are also offering a Triple P Primary course starting in January 25. The course is for parents or caregivers interested in promoting their child’s development and potential or simply wish to adopt a positive parenting approach to manage or prevent negative behaviour from developing.
The course is for parents of children 4 to 8 years old. Younger or slightly older will be considered on an individual basis. You can refer or parents can referrer themselves, by emailing ParentingService@portsmouthcc.gov.uk.
