SEND audit

SEND pathway

The SEND audit is to identify the children at your setting who require additional support for SEND. When completed, you should return it to eyinclusion@portsmouthcc.gov.uk.

Please return by Monday 14 October 2024.

This will enable the early years inclusion team to prioritise and allocate appropriate support and guidance. Please complete for all children identified with SEND. Please write 'NIL' across the audit if there are none and submit.

Babies naturally grasp things and pull them to their mouths, but then find it difficult to let go. Flimsy nappy sacks can easily cling to a baby’s face as they breathe in and cause suffocation or choking. Please keep them out of reach.

At drop-off and pick-up times, roads can be especially busy. This makes crossing more difficult. And it can be really distracting for children who may forget their road safety rules, especially if they spot a friend across the road. Luckily, there are plenty of things you can do to help keep them safe.

We are excited to let you know that a new module has been added to the DfE’s Early years child development training.

Module 8: Supporting individual differences and needs is now available and covers:

  • the key SEND legislation and guidance, the importance of early identification of children’s developmental differences and needs and the distinction between them
  • the impact of knowledge and learning gaps on children’s development, the identification of developmental differences and needs and when to make a referral
  • the importance of the practitioner’s role in supporting children’s individual differences and needs, creating an inclusive environment and building effective partnerships with those around the children.

This new module adds to the existing 7 modules that include child and brain development, personal, social and emotional development, communication and language, physical development, mathematics and effective curriculum and assessment.

Users can complete the modules in any order, at any time and can access this new module on their My Modules page. It is still recommended that the modules are completed in consecutive order as the training has been designed to build on previous modules, starting with child and brain development underpinning all the others.

Reminder about the Early years child development training

The flexible online course:

  • has been developed by early years experts
  • has been tested with early years practitioners and experts, and refined based on feedback
  • gives practical advice for supporting babies and children in early years settings
  • reinforces understanding through videos, learning check questions and short end of module tests
  • allows users to and pause and restart the training at any time and now start the modules in any order at any time
  • offers the chance to download certificates of achievement for each module.

The Office for Product Safety and Standards has issued an alert to parents and childcare settings warning that water beads should be kept away from all children under 5. If swallowed they can expand in the belly and block the bowel. Water beads don’t show up on X-ray, so finding them can be really complicated and a child may need major surgery to remove them.
