Global Equality Collective - next steps |
|
|
We are delighted that so many PEP schools have signed up for the GEC fully-funded offer. We now need all schools to move to complete their data capture for all three surveys (leadership self assessment, staff and student surveys). As we will be looking for year 2 data insights before the end of March 2025, we are keen that you allow at least six months between surveying your communities.
This timeline illustrates key dates and data capture points. Schools are able to complete all three surveys within a week as other GEC schools and trusts do, or you may have planned to achieve this month by month. At this point, your self assessment should be closed and you should be looking to roll out and complete your staff surveys this month before ideally getting your student voice before the end of term. If you have exam classes, we suggest you schedule this for the first month after the summer break. Schools that only complete one cycle will be unable to benchmark their data in 2025 so the time is now!
As usual, the GEC team is on hand to support you so please email office@thegec.education if you have any questions.
Work and mental wellbeing teacher survey |
|
|
Are you a UK school teacher? Do you want to have your voice heard about your work and mental wellbeing? We are a team of researchers from the University of Winchester who are surveying teachers’ experience of work and mental wellbeing. We have a two-part survey – part one is a short 5-10 minute series of questions, and then part two is a longer 10-15 minute detailed questionnaire about current challenges in teaching.
If you take part in either or both parts of the study, you can be entered into a random prize draw to win an Amazon voucher of values:
- One prize of £100
- Ten prizes of £50
- Twenty prizes of £20
If you complete both parts of the survey you will be entered into the draw twice.
If you have any questions about the project or its outcomes, please email Dr Liam Satchell: liam.satchell@winchester.ac.uk

The Children's Long COVID service has been extended until March 2025 and are now able to expand this to include children and young people with a diagnosis of ME/CF (Chronic Fatigue). The service is a specialist team including a paediatrician, occupational therapist, physiotherapist, and psychologist who will discuss the child's symptoms and meet with them face to face if necessary.
The team will work with the child/family to help develop and implement a plan to support them moving forwards. The service will provide signposting to self-help and community resources. For further information, please see the guidance for schools, families and referrers.
Portsmouth Young Carers Service update |
|
|
This week is Carers Week, with a focus this year on recognising and supporting carers in the community.
Making a referral to Portsmouth Young Carers Service (5 to 18 years) We prefer to receive electronic referrals. Please ensure you include as much information as possible on the form, including any additional needs the young carer may have, and use the content to support your own work with young carers and their family.
A copy of our most recent paper referral form can be downloaded here. This format may be preferred if a family is making the referral themselves. The document should be printed, completed by hand, scanned, and emailed to: youngcarers@portsmouthcc.gov.uk
Some ways your school/college can identify and support your young carers:
- Continue to signpost young carers, young adult carers (18 to 25 years) and carers (18 years plus) to PCC carers services. Print off and share the leaflet with families and add to your young carers website information. You can also share these links: Portsmouth Young Carers Service and Portsmouth SEND Local Offer.
- As a school/college:
- Ensure that you liaise with previous settings and directly ask families if they are caring for anyone as students join your setting.
- Promote young carers/carers in your whole school/college community.
- Review your current provision for young carers and create a plan to make at least some small changes to develop your school/college provision for young carers/carers. (An initial young carers review and young carers development plan template are available).
As a service, we can provide TAW support for schools and colleges. Please get in contact if you would like more information, including staff training, assembly delivery for EYFS/KS1, KS2 and KS3/4 and resources. We can also provide tailored resources and information for colleges. To contact the team, please email: youngcarers@portsmouthcc.gov.uk

The project, funded by the English Football League Trust, lasts for one half term, delivered weekly, and consists of a 45min classroom session on the importance of healthy eating and an active lifestyle, followed by a 45min active session featuring fun games rather than a traditional P.E session.
These sessions offer a great alternative to more traditional healthy eating sessions delivered in PSHE, are free of charge and can be booked in for autumn 1 or any half term beyond that. Research into teaching assistant retention - Share survey with teaching assistants |
|
|
Teach Portsmouth is undertaking research into teaching assistant retention and how we can support schools to retain staff. It is hoped that the data received during the discovery stage will be used to create an initiative to support retention.
The third and final activity is an anonymised survey for teaching assistants to complete. It is hoped that the anonymised survey will provide more clarity about teaching assistant's experiences of working in the city. There are four sections in the survey that cover: CPD/training, career progression, barriers/challenges and opportunities.
A huge thank you to everyone who has already shared the survey - we have had a great response so far. There is still time to complete the survey before the deadline at midnight on Friday 21 June 2024. As a thank you, those who choose to opt-in can enter a prize draw to win a £25 Amazon voucher.
Please download the toolkit which contains text you can use in an email to teaching assistants and the link to complete the survey online.

Foster carer skill fees that reflect experience and professional development |
|
|
In addition to fostering allowances, foster carers who have or gain the necessary skills and experience to care for young people with additional needs receive weekly or specialist skill fees.
Foster carer Jo explains: “The financial support is based on a tier system from level one to level three. These include weekly packages of financial support for all carers that cover the children’s basic needs, and then your professional fee."
Jo continues: "The more experience you have, the higher up you become. Level three foster carers typically take in children with more complex needs which can include children with disabilities.”
