Senior mental health lead training |
|
|
New opportunity to claim a second grant if the trained lead has left
The DfE continues to offer a grant to schools to train a senior mental health lead.
Schools and colleges that have already claimed a DfE grant are now eligible for a second grant if their trained senior mental health lead has left the post. This is in recognition that the previous lead may not have had the opportunity to implement their learning and embed a whole school/college approach (WSCA) to mental health and wellbeing.
The application process remains the same as the first-time round with one additional step: when completing the online form, the applicant needs to tick the declaration to confirm the previously trained senior mental health lead at the setting has now moved on from the role.
The flyer has been updated to reflect this change to the DfE grant offer.
Full details of the grant and how to apply can be found here.
For any queries, please email Sarah.Christopher@portsmouthcc.gov.uk.

Private Fostering Awareness Day |
|
|
Coram BAAF and local authorities in England are coming together to raise awareness of private fostering on Friday 8 November 2023. Coram BAAF are hosting a free online briefing on the day.
If a child is staying with someone who isn’t a close relative for more than 28 days, this would be classed as a private fostering arrangement and Portsmouth City Council legally need to be informed to ensure their welfare.
Aimee Dennis, private fostering and connected persons assessment social worker at Portsmouth City Council is holding one-hour virtual briefings via Microsoft Teams to talk about private fostering, what it is, and the support we need to identify children who are privately fostered which are nationally vastly underreported.
The briefings are being held on:
- Tuesday 28 November 2023, 3.30pm - 4.30pm
- Tuesday 16 January 2024, 12pm - 1pm
Everyone working with children and families is welcome to join.
To book your place, please email Aimee.Dennis@portsmouthcc.gov.uk. We are also available to attend team meetings as required.
If you think you have identified an arrangement or have a question, please call us on 02392 834071 and ask to speak to Aimee, email or contact Portsmouth MASH on 02392 688793.

Updates from Portsmouth Music Hub |
|
|
1. We Create Christmas Market - Performers needed
Portsmouth Creates are on the hunt for solo or community group based performers/choirs at our We Create Christmas Market on 9 and 10 December 2023 outside the old Dorothy Perkins building in Cascades. This is a market dedicated to the sale of products produced by local creatives in a bid to encourage people to support local businesses, particularly during the busy Christmas period.
They have a total of 15 slots of 45 minutes each over the two days, and need a variety of individuals/groups/choirs to perform music that includes Christmas themed songs.
The idea is to provide a warm and welcoming environment for shoppers and spread the festive feeling over the weekend and a great opportunity for people to share performances with the public. Due to limited on space for this event, only vocal performances can be accommodated.
If your school or organisation would like to get involved, please contact Billie Coe at Portsmouth Creates, billie@portsmouthcreates.co.uk.
2. Mary Rose Museum Takeover Day
The Mary Rose Museum has a Takeover Day on Friday 17 November 2023. The Museum would like to invite one school to visit that day and perform a song about the Mary Rose.
The resources to teach the song can be found on the Music Hub website.
If you are interested in being selected for this exciting opportunity, please contact Sue.Beckett@portsmouthcc.gov.uk by Friday 3 November 2023.
3. School hall needed for BBC Radio Solent’s Carol Concert
BBC Radio Solent is looking for a large school hall to accommodate about 500+ people for the annual BBC Radio Solent’s Carol Concert. The BBC would like to record the concert late November/early December between 6pm - 8pm with access to the hall all day for the BBC engineers to set up and for rehearsals.
If you are able to host this event (there may be some payment available) and you would like your school choir to be involved this would certainly be possible.
Please contact Helen Head if this is something you would like to get involved with or you would like to discuss logistics, by Friday 10 November 2023: helen.head01@bbc.co.uk

ALL Portsmouth Primary Hub meeting |
|
|
The next Association for Languages Learning (ALL) Portsmouth Primary Hub meeting will take place on Thursday 16 November 2023, 4pm - 5.15pm via Zoom.
This session explores how, as primary languages practitioners, we are perfectly placed to adapt our curriculum offer to ensure that lesson content moves beyond tokenistic notions of 'diversity' to encourage even young learners to confront the challenging realities of life in a postcolonial world, enabling all pupils, regardless of their background or ethnicity, to achieve the best possible outcomes.
Through discussion, real-life examples and an examination of alternative versions of the same story, we will ask ourselves one of the most challenging questions faced by language teachers today: what could a decolonised MFL curriculum actually look like in practice?
To secure your attendance at this event, please email Liz Lord at lizlord0502@gmail.com.

This will be a great networking opportunity, as well as Caroline talking to you about new texts and existing sets of books that might work for your school in DR and that can be loaned out to you. It would also be great if schools could bring an overview of the books they are currently using and when so we can collate this information.
