Prevent newsletter and training |
|
|
The latest Prevent newsletter for the education sector includes revised Prevent duty guidance (PDG), new Prevent videos, risk assessment guidance, national training dates and additional resources.
In terms of Prevent training, the recommendation is that all staff receive a Prevent briefing or refresher every three years (this can be completed via an e-learning awareness session). Those with additional safeguarding responsibilities should attend a session every two years, ideally with a delivered virtual session or face to face. The Prevent team runs four virtual sessions per year that school DSLs can book on - please see below.
The quarterly training dates are delivered on Microsoft Teams:
- Monday 4 December 2023 - 10am - 11.30am
- Tuesday 19 March 2024 - 10am - 12pm
- Thursday 20 June 2024 - 1pm - 3pm
- Tuesday 24 September 2024 - 10am - 12pm
- Thursday 5 December 2024 - 10am - 12pm

Developmental Language Disorder Awareness Day - 20 October 2023 |
|
|
Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) is a hidden but common disability that affects 1 in 14 people causing difficulties understanding and using language for no known reason. On average two students in every class of 30 have the neurodevelopmental condition DLD.
This year’s #DLDday theme is DLD Around the World:
- DLD affects people around the world regardless of age, gender, language spoken or ethnicity.
- Speaking more than one language does not cause DLD. In fact, people with DLD can learn multiple languages.
Students with DLD can succeed at school when they are identified and access the right support. But first they need our help.

1. Help us promote the Love to Teach event
Teach Portsmouth is working with training providers in the city to ensure children and young people have the professionals they need to excel in the classroom. Teach Portsmouth's new Love to Teach events act as an exciting first step, encouraging people to learn more about their teacher training options.
We are asking schools and colleges to share this information with parents and carers to increase interest and awareness about becoming a teacher. Please include this suggested text and image in your school newsletters. You could also share this on your social media pages too. If you need something more bespoke, please email teachportsmouth@portsmouthcc.gov.uk.
2. Exhibit at Teach Portsmouth's become a teaching assistant event
Do you have a need to recruit support staff for your school or college in 2023/24? Teach Portsmouth's become a teaching assistant events have welcomed over 300 people through their doors since launching last year. Due to their popularity, these events are returning this year across two locations in the city. Our next event will be based at Paulsgrove Community Centre on Wednesday 15 November 2023 from 10am - 2pm.
Schools and colleges who have attended these events have recruited both teaching assistants and volunteers into support roles. There are two sessions across the day with a series of presentations from training providers and school staff who share their experience from inside the classroom.
The fee for MATs to exhibit is £300 + VAT and for schools is £200 + VAT. If you would like to exhibit at the event, please email teachportsmouth@portsmouthcc.gov.uk by Friday 3 November 2023. The team will provide a booking form and confirm details with you once you have registered your interest to attend.

Team of 24 complete the GSR for Foster Portsmouth
A team of 24 foster carers, the children they care for, their birth children and families, staff members and supporters took part in the Great South Run's 10-mile, 5km, junior and mini races this October.
They hoped to raise awareness of the need for more foster carers for vulnerable children and young people in Portsmouth.
Foster carer Rob Cooke, who ran the 5km with his daughter Lauren Crockford, said: "I've completed the 10-mile race three times. I prefer shorter runs now… and so do my knees!"
Rob added: "I have loved fostering and would recommend it to anyone. There are so many children who need caring for."
