Brand New Activity Films

BBC's Tiny Happy People have created new activity films for 3-4 year olds and 4-5 year olds with more detailed information about the language benefits for little ones. Created with speech and language and early years experts, activity themes include, managing feelings and emotions, as well as building resilience and self-confidence.

Check out one of the new films below and watch all of the new activities for 3-4 year olds here.

Talking about feelings with toys - children will often express different emotions through play using their toys before they know how to use words to express them. This activity can help parents/carers teach their little ones words they’ll need to verbalise their feelings. Watch the film in full here.

Watch one of the new activity films for 4-5 year olds below and find the new series of activities here.

Go on a sound treasure hunt - ask little ones to find as many objects as they can around the house that begin with the same letter. Families can also play this game when they are out and about. This activity is great for developing a child’s understanding that words are made up of lots of different letter sounds, which is a really important skill to have when learning to read and write. You can view the full activity here.

Check out these activities from the Tiny Happy People website that you can do in your setting or suggest parents take a look at:

You can find the full activity section here.

3) ACTIVITY: Ready Steady Go anticipation games (12-18 months)

Anticipation games are a great way for little ones to learn about the back and forth of conversation. Parents/carers can help their child to join in by encouraging them to fill in the gap… Ready, steady…go!

4) ACTIVITY: Exploring nature (2-3 years)

A nature collection is a great way for toddlers to learn new words and explore the world around them. Parents/carers can help their little one collect items in their garden or park and encourage them to describe different textures.

5) ACTIVITY: Play memory games (3-4 years)

Playing memory games about everyday situations are lots of fun and a great way for parents/carers to help their little one build sentences using decontextualised language. Use the past tense to talk about what they bought at the shops or what they saw on a walk.
