The Portsmouth 'Read With Me' project is back!

The Early Years Team encourage all settings to take part in the 'Read With Me' Project, by using the 10 recommended reads with their pre-school children in the last half term before they start school.

Here are our 10 recommended reads - many of which will be familiar to you and probably in your book baskets or on your book shelves.

PICTURE

We want pre-school practitioners and child minders across the city to share these high quality picture books with children and immerse them in a range of experiences to develop communication, language and literacy skills. Through exposure to these books children will hear rhythmical language patterns, rhyme, alliteration and potentially a new range of vocabulary.

Take a look at our slides, which explain the benefits of taking part in 'Read With Me' and give examples of some experiences and resources you could use with the children to develop their love for reading and familiarity with these core books.

Do also, share these books with your parents. If they can continue to read these stories with their children over the summer holidays they can keep the learning alive and help children's language and literacy skills. The public libraries across the city will have these books available for parents to borrow. We have drafted a letter, describing the project, which you can personalise and send out to parents.

And when children transfer into Year R, many of our schools will be using these books to further develop that love for reading and language and literacy skills. If you are sharing these 10 recommended reads with your children, do let the receiving schools know!
