You will no doubt be in the midst of thinking about transition and making arrangements for your pre-school cohort's smooth transition into school.

To support you in sharing information, we are making the TRANSFER RECORD 2021 available to you.

This is a non-statutory document. You could choose a different way to share information with the receiving schools.

What is vital, is that you do share information, not just about summative assessments, but about children's interests and needs so that Year R practitioners can shape their curriculum.

You can use the one page parental contribution in the Transfer Record to gather the parents voice, or you could use our longer Parental Contribution. This really gives parents an opportunity to provide a range of information to the new school e.g. the child's place in the family, favourite things to play with, what they like to do at home and a more in-depth look at how their child learns, the skills mastered and any social and emotional needs that are evident.

We also have the SEND Transition Tool to support you in planning transition for those children with a special educational need or disability. Help the receiving school find out about strategies and interventions that have worked for you and plan what will happen in those first weeks in Year R for the child and their parents to understand.

And finally, watch out for our Transitions Podcast which is being released at the start of June to those who are members (have purchased a package) of our Early Years Training and Development Programme. If you have not yet signed up, visit Early Years and Childcare (portsmouth.gov.uk) to view our offer and purchase your package.

Don’t forget to ask parents about the schools that your pre-school cohort are transferring to.

We appreciate it is harder to have conversations with parents who may be restricted in meeting with you to talk about children, but it is vital that you know the receiving schools and make contact with them either through completion of the Transfer Record or other methods.
