Management and Expectation Survey (MES)

Information on management practices includes businesses usual practices regarding the use of targets, key performance indicators (KPI’s), employment and hiring decisions and their culture of continuous improvement among others. The survey also aims to collect information on businesses current performance, and future expectations, about turnover, investment, employment and spending on resources.

ONS Saferooms re-opening
From Monday 13 September we will be re-opening our newly refurbished ONS SRS Saferooms and look forward to welcoming you back.
A small number of data owners have indicated that, once ONS Saferooms re-open, access to their datasets should revert to the saferoom environment only. This will only affect a very limited number of datasets (and therefore projects).
SRS teams are working with data owners to confirm their preferences and we will contact you directly if access arrangements for your project need to change.

The administrative data initiative that transforms researchers’ access to the UK’s wealth of public sector data to help solve social and economic issues will continue for a further five years.
The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), part of UK Research and Innovation, will invest over £90 million in ADR UK enabling it to ensure policy-relevant data linking and research projects across the UK can continue.
ADR UK played a pivotal role in the pandemic through its investment in trusted research environments across the UK including our Secure Research Service and the SAIL Databank. These trusted research environments acquired data and made it available for approved, secure research that was vital to the pandemic response across the UK.

Dataset of the Month
Growing Up in England (GUIE) is a de-identified dataset for research, created through collaboration between the Office for National Statistics (ONS), Administrative Data Research UK (ADR UK), and the Department for Education (DfE). The dataset links 2011 Census data with the feasibility version of All-Education Dataset for England (AEDE) – longitudinal record-level data for government-funded education in England, created from the National Pupil Database (NPD), Individualized Learner Records (ILR) and Further Education (FE) data. Around two million records were matched with 8 million households, producing a significant sample size for analysis.
GUIE enables a breadth of new research questions to be answered; questions that are much more difficult to answer using traditional data collection methods such as surveys. Areas of research that GUIE can help answer include:
-
relationships between personal/familial characteristics and educational attainment
-
educational outcomes for Roma, Gypsy and Traveler children and young people
-
underlying drivers of geographical differences in educational attainment
-
insight on children who are vulnerable or of concern by virtue of their circumstances
GUIE will allow researchers to shine a light on what is and isn’t working to support children and young people and give policymakers valuable evidence for developing services that work better for all.
The dataset will address the evidence gaps in information about the lives of vulnerable children, as identified by the Children’s Commissioner for England's 2017 review of childhood vulnerability.
A feasibility study using the linked GUIE dataset was conducted by the ONS Centre for Equalities and Inclusion, Data Linkage and Data Curation teams to test the use of the data for providing insights on personal characteristics, educational attainment, household characteristics, vulnerable groups and geography.
You can read the full report detailing the findings, published in July 2020.
In case you missed it, you can catch up on last months edition of our newsletter.
