New datasets in the SRS
Coronavirus Infection Survey Combined Vaccination Data
This release contains ONS derived vaccination information for participants in the COVID-19 Infection Survey (CIS). The Combined Vaccination data has been derived from the National Immunisation Management Service (NIMS) where this was available; and from the responses in the CIS questionnaire where NIMS records were unavailable. The file contains variables relating to Covid-19 vaccination status, dates and types of vaccines, and a column of CIS IDs. The IDs can be used to link to the CIS extract file which is also available in the SRS. This linkage is intended to provide a richer source of vaccination information for CIS respondents and enable analysis on vaccine efficacy.
OFQUAL/GRADE (A-Level and GCSE Awarding Data)
Accredited researchers will be able to apply to access the GRADE (Grading and Admissions Data for England) dataset. This comprises key data about centre assessment grades and calculated grades in 2020. Visit the GOV.UK website for more information.

Smart Energy Research Lab (SERL)
|
|
 |
The Smart Energy Research Lab (SERL) provides access to a wealth of invaluable data for energy research. Access requires researchers to go through the UK Statistics Authority Accredited Researcher processes to gain access to non-ONS data.
SERL is hosted via the UK Data Service (UKDS) Trusted Research Environment and offers researchers an unprecedented opportunity to utilise the high quality energy data currently available, to help make the UK’s energy system more sustainable, affordable, and reliable.
The SERL research portal allows access to the following data sources:
- Daily and half-hourly energy (electricity and gas) consumption data
- Additional smart meter technical data
- Contextual data
- A short SERL survey completed by participant households providing information about the household and building
- Energy and Performance Certificate (EPC)
- Weather data
We encourage you to visit their website for more information about SERL, including video presentations of what is available, how it is collected and how you can access it.

HDR UK COVID:19 Funding Call
|
|
 |
This August, the COVID-19 Data and Connectivity National Core Study, partnering with the Alan Turing Institute, will invite the UK’s data science community to use the health data research infrastructure established by the COVID-19 National Core Studies programme, including a nationwide network of Trusted Research Environments (TREs), to contribute to the national COVID-19 response and future pandemic preparedness.
For more information on the funding call, and data availability and access, you can sign up to HDR UK's webinar 'Accessing COVID-19 Data'.

Now live: Magistrates and Crown Court Fellowship Project Page |
|
 |
We have worked with the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) Data First team to bring the Data First Crown and Magistrates data into the SRS. These datasets are now being used as part of an ADR UK and MoJ Fellowship by four researchers. Visit the ADR UK website for a further explanation of their work.
With various departments having worked hard to bring the data on board and get the fellowship up and running, we are now working to support the Fellowship team to ensure that research can carry on in an effective manner and using the experience to work towards future Fellowship calls.

ADR UK - COVID-19 Question Bank
The ONS’s new Coronavirus (COVID-19) Question Bank.
The Government Statistical Service (GSS) have recently published a COVID-19 Question Bank. It is a repository of questions asked by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) about the COVID-19 pandemic.
The COVID-19 Question Bank aims:
- To provide a list of questions that can be used to improve harmonisation across surveys.
- To provide users with an understanding of what data the ONS holds in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Question Bank can be found on the GSS COVID-19 harmonisation guidance webpage. This is updated regularly to include the latest questions and any further surveys.
To find out more about this work please see their blog “Have you got a question about COVID-19?”.

Project application workflow chart
The flowchart shows the lifecycle of a project application, from the initial project details being submitted on the Research Accreditation Service (RAS) to the final creation stages before going live in the Secure Research Service (SRS). We hope this aids your understanding of what to expect during the project application process, and each stage your project application will go through.
Current Project status can be viewed in RAS showing which stage of the process your project is at.
If you have any further questions about your project application please contact the SRS Customer Support Team.

Case Study of the Month
Informing policies to tackle inequalities
How have inequalities developed within and between different groups? How do processes, such as globalisation, and advancements, such as technological change, offset or reinforce the shaping of inequalities? IFS’s research on the nature of changing inequalities and the key forces that have been shaping them, are examining these pressing questions as they aim to inform and improve the quality of policymaking debates around economic issues.
The research was awarded in the ONS Research Excellence Awards 2020.
