Childcare Choices: Get the help that fits your family, so you can juggle work and life

Thousands of families could be saving money on their childcare costs. But some simply don’t know what support they might be eligible for.

The Childcare Choices website brings together all the existing childcare offers in one place, so parents can get the help that fits their family. This could be through Tax-Free Childcare, 30 Hours Childcare, or Universal Credit Childcare. Some families might be eligible to use more than one childcare scheme together and get the most out of it.

And from next year even more help is on the way:

• As of April 2024, eligible working parents in England with children aged 2 have access to 15 hours childcare.
• From September 2024, the 15 hours childcare offer will be expanded to eligible working parents in England with children between 9 and 23 months old.
• From September 2025, eligible working parents in England with children between 9 months up to school age will have access to 30 hours childcare.

Support is also expanding for primary-school aged children – from September 2024, parents are expected to see an expansion in the availability of childcare in their local area before and after school, between 8am and 6pm, also known as ‘wraparound care’.

Libraries are Warm Spaces

Every library in Manchester is a warm, safe and free space that residents of all ages can come in and stay warm all day in a positive environment with lots of resources. Again this year Manchester Libraries will be offering free teas and coffees and encouraging people stay as long as they want in their library.

Manchester Active

Grant funding for children and young people’s cycling activity

As part of the Manchester European Capital of Cycling, they're pleased to announce the Manchester Active small grant programme is now live! Manchester Active is offering small grants of up to £500 to community groups to engage children and young people between the ages of 6 to 16 years in cycling, including putting on events and activities.

Please note the funding is for cycling delivery within the Manchester City Council area.

Manchester Disability Collaborative

Manchester Disability Collaborative is currently seeking the views of disabled people to inform their aims for 2024. 

The Collaborative aims to improve Manchester for disabled people living and working here, and picks four priorities each year to work on. They're keen to involve as many disabled people as possible, along with their parents, carers and other stakeholders.

Are you looking for teaching support?

Think Employment have candidates ready to interview. Their candidates are level 3 qualified and DBS checked. 

At Think Employment, the (Ofsted Rated 'Good') training provider, they are offering select Manchester-based educational institutions the opportunity to collaborate with us in sourcing candidates for their roles. They only enroll the most suitable people on their Bootcamp, monitoring their progress, ability, and passion for a career in teaching support. Upon completion of their Bootcamp, learners receive a Level 3 qualification and are fit to provide teaching support to educators. You tell them when you're hiring, and they'll send you suitable candidates.

Our Town Hall: Portraits of a workforce exhibition

Our Town Hall: Portraits of a workforce exhibition | Manchester City Council

A new exhibition at Manchester Central Library is set to focus on some of the skilled craftspeople, artisan trades and construction team behind the current transformation of Manchester's Town Hall. The exhibition’s focus is to highlight some of the people behind the work. As well as modern construction workers and the behind-the-scenes staff who make it all possible there are some incredible heritage trades involved. Stonemasonry, mosaic making, stained glass repair and manufacture, horology: these are all crafts that would have been widespread in the 1870s but are now very much specialist and rare trades.  They are, however, critical to our restoration project. The exhibition will run in Manchester Central Library's first floor exhibition space from Friday 18 October 2024 until June 2025.

Closing Date: June 2025

The Northbound Programme

Starting date: 10 January (Part time)

Be Well’s Northbound Programme is a free 8-week programme, consisting of four group coaching sessions every two weeks. Here, areas like career exploration, goal-setting and practical job-search strategies will be covered. It will also include four one-to-one appointments every two weeks (in between group sessions), where participants will have a chance to build their confidence, identify their strengths and create actionable career plans. It’s an opportunity for residents to take practical steps in understanding what they want to do and how to get there.

Cultural Well-being Programme

CWP are delivering a free 6 to 8 week culturally sensitive programme for individuals living in Manchester and Trafford from South Asian and African /Caribbean communities, suffering from severe mental illness (with long-term mental health diagnosis / risk of being hospitalised due to a deterioration of their mental health).

North Manchester Together 

NMT Training & Development Programme

North Manchester Together are providing a training and development programme over the next four months, with a combination of in-person and online sessions across various venues within North Manchester. The training is completely free with lunch provided and travel costs reimbursed to all VCFSE groups based and/or delivering activity in North Manchester only.
