Welcome to the Lambeth Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) Newsletter with information and news relating to local Lambeth and wider VAWG issues.

We look forward to seeing you at the next Lambeth VAWG Forum 10am – 12 midday on Thursday 29th June at the Lambeth Town Hall, Brixton Hill, SW2 1RW in the Mayors Heritage Suite (TH1-20 & 21). This is being run as a hybrid meeting with a link to join on Link to join on Microsoft Teams here.

We encourage all residents, businesses and visitors in the borough to express their concerns and ideas on our Commonplace site to help make us a safer borough for everyone. You can also use this site if you witnessed an incident taking place.


Support services

  • The Gaia Centre support Lambeth based survivors of gender-based violence - including sexual violence and domestic abuse - support available by telephone, email, and text, whatever's safest. You can contact the Gaia Centre on 0207 7733 8724 between 9am-5pm. Outside of office hours and on the Bank Holidays, you can contact them on 07725 245 779. In an emergency call 999.
  • Children Overcoming Domestic Abuse (CODA) is a 12 week programme that works with the non-abusive parent and child (4-11 years) concurrently. Groups will be held at the St Stephen’s Children Centre on Wednesday morning. The pilot group starts on 13th September for 12 weeks;  the cut-off date for accepting referrals for this group is 31st July 23 however they will continue accepting referrals for future CODA groups Contact: CODA@lambeth.gov.uk; Tel: 07842 323 655.   • The Vavengers is a UK-based charity committed to ending Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) and all other forms of Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG).  They are running a support hub in Lambeth for women and girls who are survivors or at risk of FGM/C, Gender Based Violence, refugees and asylum seekers, the next session is 9th July. Local VAWG News

  • New resident’s panel to help shape Lambeth’s abuse prevention panel. Forty-one local people took part in a series of focus groups, one to one sessions and surveys to help shape our VAWG Experts by Experience panel. You can read more here and find the recommendations report here.
  • The Lambeth VAWG team are looking for an external facilitator (either from an agency or an independent consultancy) to support in the delivery of our VAWG Experts by Experience panel. We are inviting expressions of interest and you can find the full specification by clicking here.
  • The Lambeth VAWG Team have updated our webpages which have up to date information about local support services, our multi-agency meetings and our VAWG strategy as well as other useful information for practitioners and residents. It can be found at the same address lambeth.gov.uk/VAWG
  • The Lambeth VAWG Team have created a resource library including factsheets and a range of pre-recorded webinars and podcasts which have subtitles available in the 11 most commonly spoken languages in Lambeth. We have pulled these together alongside a list of all local VAWG training providers in this resource which also includes some best practice guidance on monitoring and evaluating VAWG training. It is currently in draft stage and we would very much appreciate your input on any amendments or additions we can improve it with. Resource pack here.
  • Walk & Talk with a police officer in your local area. We’re inviting you to tell us your experiences and concerns. If you feel unsafe in a particular area, let us know so we can work with partners to improve safety on our streets. View flyer here

Regional VAWG News 

  • The Respect Young People’s Service (RYPS) has launched a bespoke website designed to support practitioners working with young people using harm in their close relationships.

  • Employer’s Initiative Against Domestic Abuse (EIDA) Insights from EIDA Beacons on developing a response to perpetrators of domestic abuse. The resource summarises insights that emerged from the discussion. It is recommended to all employers thinking about how best to respond to perpetrators. Read more.
  • Karma Nirvana have released a spotlight report based from helpline data in 2022 on Breaking the Stigma: Empowering Males subject to Honour Based Abuse. Read more.
  • The National Police Chiefs’ Council has issued the first ever Strategic Threat and Risk Assessment of crimes posing the most danger to women and girls. These assessments are produced for all crimes included in the Strategic Policing Requirement to help forces target their resources. Read more.
  • Galop have released a new report focusing on experiences of LGBT+ abuse and revealing the lack of support available outside of major cities. Read more.
  • The Traveller Movement would like to hear the views of frontline domestic abuse practitioners. 98% of domestic abuse service providers reported needing more specialised training on how to support Romani (Gypsy), Traveller and Roma survivors. Have your say.
  • The Domestic Abuse Commissioner recently responded to the government’s consultation about children’s social care. You can read her response here.
  • Standing Together are launching the Crossing Pathways: Integrating Best Practice within Health & Domestic Abuse Networks, which has the joint purpose of improving knowledge, pathways, and responses for survivors of domestic abuse within healthcare settings. VAWG Training 

  • Sexual Violence Awareness and Support Skills for Safer Streets in London – final free training session for private security staff and managers will take place online, 10th July 6-9pm. You can book your place here.
  • Karma Nirvana are offering low-cost workshops on recognising and responding to so called “honour” based abuse. Upcoming dates are 13th September and 27th November. Get your £20 tickets here.
  • St Giles Trust have some parent/carer sessions coming up online which are available to all within the borough for parents, carers and professionals. They will take place on Zoom and are 1.5 hours long. Flyer here.
  • Introduction into to "honour" based abuse, forced marriage & FGM webinar by AVA & Iranian & Kurdish Women's Rights Organisation. Wednesday 28th June 4-5pm. Sign up here
  • Respect has a range of training available on working with perpetrators of domestic abuse and male victim/survivors of domestic abuse here.
  • Stand by Her offer training on the origins of stereotypes, analyse the impact on women, and explore what men can do to change how women are perceived and treated in today's society. For more information click here.
  • SafeLives offered a Dash and Dara webinar on 18th May. The webinar covers using the new Domestic Abuse Risk Assessment (Dara), how this works alongside the Domestic Abuse, Stalking and Honour based abuse risk identification checklist (Dash), and some updates relating to the Dash. You can find the recording and FAQs here.
  • The LSCP are offering free training on female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) on 19th July 10am-12pm for all children and young people’s practitioners. Book your tickets here.

The Lambeth VAWG Team offer a range of recorded webinars which can be shared and accessed at the learner’s convenience.

The list of webinars available are regularly updated and can be found here alongside a best practice model for monitoring and evaluating VAWG training. All webinars are available with transcripts which have been translated into the 11 most commonly spoken languages in Lambeth, information about how to turn on transcripts can be found within the resource. Other recommended training courses

  • All strands of violence against women and girls affect the safety and wellbeing of children. Practitioners working with children, young people, parents or families should assess the need to have standalone training on Safeguarding Children.
