Council Leader pledges £1m to fight climate change

Councillors will look to approve a budget of some £1million at a Horsham District Council Cabinet meeting on 27 January to help protect and enhance the District’s local environment.

This is in line with the Council’s corporate objectives to tackle the effects of climate change, become carbon neutral by 2030 and reverse the decline in wildlife.

Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for the Environment and Rural Affairs Cllr James Wright commented:

"I very much welcome this extra investment to support a host of new measures to protect the local environment.

"As a council we are on a mission to tackle climate change and this increase in funding targeted specifically at initiatives to reduce carbon and increase biodiversity across our District very much reflects this."

Celebrating one year of Wilder Horsham District

Wilder Horsham District has already achieved much to be proud of.  See what the project has been up to, and celebrate the achievements already made, in our first End of Year report.

Despite a slow start due to the pandemic lockdowns restricting site meetings, the first six months of activity has nevertheless resulted in some great progress.

We would like to thank all landowners, community groups, organisations, partners, and individuals who have engaged with and supported the project so far.

Applications invited for community climate projects

Climate friendly

1. Community Climate Fund

Our Community Climate Fund is open once again for new applications.

Local voluntary and community groups can bid for up to £5000 funding for projects that share our vision of becoming a carbon neutral District.

What projects have received funding so far

Projects that have received funding so far have included initiatives such as changing from high energy to low energy lighting, installing PV solar panels, tree planting, developing a drought resistant garden, wildlife surveys, installing an air source heat pump to replace a gas fired boiler, and many more.

Please pass pass this on to anyone you know who may be interested; it may be your local scout group, church, Friends group or club, or any other local community group.

Applications close on Friday 11 February.

Reuse Click and Collect

Our new ‘Reuse Click and Collect’ shop helps reduce waste

In Summer 2021 we installed a trial Reuse container at Horsham’s Hop Oast’s Park and Ride to collect donations of unwanted furniture and quirky collectables that are still in good condition.

The idea was so successful that we filled two containers, which we have now closed, and we have opened a new online shop so that the donated items can be sold to those who need it.

Take a look, pay for the item online, and come and collect it from our Click and Collect point. All money made from sales goes back into funding the reuse and recycling projects.

Why we're running a Reuse trial

Keeping good quality products in active use for longer preserves natural resources and prevents waste. It also supports those who are less able to purchase brand new items, and avoids carbon emissions from new product manufacture and distribution.

This initiative is funded by the West Sussex Waste Partnership and managed by Horsham District Council.

Food waste Love earth image

Wasting food feeds climate change!

Why not start the new year with a renewed motivation to cut back now on food waste?

We are currently working with other West Sussex councils to develop a strategy for dealing with food waste. This is in line with the Government's commitment in its recent Environment Act to roll out separate household food waste collection across the country.

Food waste makes up a staggering 30-40% of the average household general waste bin in West Sussex!

Our Food Waste collection trial has now been completed

In Autumn 2021 we undertook a three month food waste collection trial with one hundred varied households across the District. The trial has now closed and we will be reviewing the data in the coming weeks.

So far we know that in three months:

  • Each household on average recycled over 3kg of food waste per week.
  • General waste per household was cut on average from 6kg to 4kg per week.

This means that the quantity of household waste each week was reduced by one third!
