Included in this special edition newsletter is information around our new employment and housing support offers for Ukrainian guests. In addition, there is information around where you can find work and some tips to help you get into work.
The following information is subject to being updated as further support becomes available.
What are the housing options for Ukrainian guests who are living with hosts in East Sussex?
We are working in partnership with hosts as we support them in their generous commitment to accommodate Ukrainian guests in East Sussex. We are also committed to welcoming Ukrainian guests to the UK and ensuring that their housing options are made clear.
This guidance explains what options and support are available to hosts and guests.
We strongly encourage hosts and guests to discuss expectations as early as you can, and within the first 4 months of guests’ arrival. This should include talking about what hosts can offer and for how long, what guests’ future intentions are, and how you will plan next steps.
Hosts have committed to provide accommodation to their guests for a minimum of 6 months, but many will be able to continue to accommodate their guests for longer. Whatever you decide to do at the 6-month point, please inform us at least 2 months before you think your situation may change. You can do that by contacting us at ukraine@eastsussex.gov.uk.
The options for hosts and guests after six months are:
- Continuing sponsorship
- Finding a new host
- Finding privately rented accommodation
- Contacting your local district or borough council for housing advice
For any future accommodation, it is essential that you plan well in advance. Affordable housing can be very hard to find, and you will need to find out what is possible in your situation.
There is help available if you need it, but it is important you let the right organisation know if and when you need help – details of who to contact are in our short guide below 👇
Support into Work
Support into Work is a project now available to assist Ukrainian guests in East Sussex to help them into employment. The project will be run by three partners and each organisation will work in locations across the county to offer the same level of support to all guests.
The Support into Work project will include:
- An assessment to understand your employability needs
- One-to-one and group training in areas such as benefit calculations, working in the UK, job search support, mock interviews and more.
- Signposting to other relevant support such as English lessons as well as qualification transference from Ukraine to the UK where possible.
- Working with employers to help them realise the benefits of hiring Ukrainian guests and make issues around referencing easier.
- Funding some childcare for parents to access this support and funding clothing for job interviews where needed.
- Working will work with the local housing authorities and services to assist those on the project to be suitably housed.
To access this support please email 📩 supportintowork@sussexcommunity.org.uk with your name and contact details. We are expecting a large sign up for this project, so we expect to get back to every enquiry within 10 working days.

Finding job vacancies
Job boards, like Indeed, Reed, Monster and CV Library are websites (also available as phone apps) that list job vacancies. Some boards advertise a broad range of jobs. Some only advertise jobs in a specific industry.
Most of these websites allow you to apply online with a digital copy of your CV. You can also include a digital cover letter to support your application.
Many job boards let you sign up to receive email alerts when an organisation publishes a new job vacancy. You may be able to personalise these for:
- full-time, part-time or temporary work
- work in a particular location
- jobs that match your skills and experience
This will help to notify you of new jobs that become available, which will likely save you time ensure only relevant jobs are sent to you.
A range of jobs are also available at East Sussex County Council which can be found here: Jobs | East Sussex County Council.
Can't get hold of work references?
We know it can be difficult to get work references for job applications, especially if your previous experience was in Ukraine. Whilst we understand this can make looking for work more difficult, there are things you can do.
Whilst you're looking for work, consider taking up short term voluntary work. This is usually unpaid work with expenses covered for travel. This can be part-time, full-time or any time you can spare.
How can volunteer work help?
Whilst you look for a more permanent paid position, volunteer work can offer a number of benefits, including:
- Offering opportunities to help you integrate into your local community
- Help to improve your English skills
- Offers the potential possibility of paid employment (in some cases)
- Enables you to receive work references for future job applications
- Contributing to your local community
