Young Carers Update

We are pleased to share that our young carers event earlier in April 2026 was a great success, with over 30 young carers attending a trip to Sewerby Hall and Gardens. These events are incredibly important, giving young carers the opportunity to take a well-deserved break from their caring responsibilities, spend time with others who understand their experiences at home, and most importantly have the chance to simply be children.

During the visit to Sewerby Hall, the group enjoyed exploring the zoo and seeing a wide range of animals. The penguins were definitely a favourite among many! Afterwards, our young carers took part in a variety of outdoor activities, including rounders, table tennis, mini golf, and more, making the most of the day in a fun and supportive environment, whilst the sun was shining! We are excited to announce our next event, which will take place at Bridlington Community Centre, New Pasture Lane, on Wednesday 27th May from 12:00 to 15:00. This will be a wellbeing focused session designed to support young carers in relaxing, connecting, and building positive coping strategies. In addition to group events, we offer a range of support through our three-tiered approach. This includes tailored one to one support for young carers where there are specific needs or targeted pieces of work to be completed, ensuring each young person receives the right level of support at the right time. We look forward to continuing to support and celebrate the incredible young carers in our community.

Information and Consultations

Supporting smooth transitions into Reception

In April 2026, the Department for Education published updated guidance to further support smooth transitions for children and families as they move into Reception. Within the guidance the DfE places strong emphasis on partnership working between early years settings, childminders, schools and families. The guidance provides practical approaches which include reciprocal visits, stay and play sessions, home visits and regular professional dialogue between settings. Portage Workshop

Tuesday 19^th May 9.30am - 4pm, Tuesday 2^nd June 9.30am - 4pm and Tuesday 16^th June 9.30am - 4pm at the Hexagon Music Centre, Coltman Avenue, Beverley, HU17 9LP.

This is a certificated training course delivered by National Portage Association Accredited Trainers.

The Portage Workshop is an introduction to the Portage Approach to working with children with additional needs and their families. The workshop is suitable for early years practitioners who work in an early year’s settings (PVI or maintained), Children’s Centres, Childminders and parents/carers of children who are receiving Portage support.

Central to the course are the ‘Portage Principles’ and the ‘Three Circle Model of Portage’.  The NPA has set standards for minimum workshop content and length.  The Workshop has a core curriculum consisting of seven modules and must last a minimum of 2 full days plus a Follow Up session.

The workshop is designed to support parents who have children that are being supported by Portage, and practitioners working with children, to help support their learning and development and to understand the strategies and principles used by Portage Workers.
