Spotlight: Section 11 and Safeguarding Self-Assessment
Section 11 of the Children Act 2004 requires various organisations and agencies to ensure they consider the need to protect and promote children's welfare in their work. It's time for the annual safeguarding self-assessment to comply with this requirement.
The safeguarding self-assessment is a crucial part of the ERSCP's approach to understanding how your organisation or agency handles its safeguarding responsibilities and how it fits into the broader practice system.
The Section 11 benefits the ERSCP by assisting the development of further strategy and resource management to meet safeguarding system needs of the multi-agency practice system.
Keep an eye out for an email with the online survey link and follow the instructions to complete the safeguarding self-assessment on time.

We are pleased to welcome Carrie Smith to the role of partnership officer, responsible for coordinating the CDOP.
Carrie has experience working in local schools, children's safeguarding, and the council's health protection team. If you have any queries about this, please email the CDOP or telephone (01482) 395545.
Keeping babies safe continues to be a priority for us. Along with the CDOP, we aim to reduce the number of babies who die or get seriously injured due to unsafe sleep practices, unsafe handling, or accidents.

How can we involve men and male carers in our multi-agency safeguarding system?
To properly assess and support a child's and family's needs, we must identify everyone involved in the child's life, including men and male carers. The National Child Practice Review Panel's 2022 report, "Myth of Invisible Men," highlighted that multi-agency practices often fail to engage men in children's lives.
The ERSCP understands through its work locally that, as a multi-agency practice system, we have not identified or engaged with key males in the lives of children.

The National Child Exploitation Awareness Day aims to highlight the issues surrounding CE, encouraging everyone to think about, identify, and speak out against abuse. It also encourages people to adopt a zero-tolerance to adults developing inappropriate relationships with children, or children exploiting and abusing their peers.
What is CE? CE is a form of abuse that involves the manipulation and/or coercion of young people under the age of 18. The criminal exploitation of children is an issue which is gaining more of a national focus and is closely related to County Lines, and other ways children and young people are drawn into drugs-related criminal activity.
